Assassination attempt on Obama

I wouldn't call this an assassination attempt. Sounds more like a messed up guy with a gun. An assassin has a plan, but this guy just shot a gun at the White House.

He did have a plan - shoot and hope he gets lucky.

Not a very good assassin, but assassination seems to be defined by the intent to kill someone of importance, regardless of whether they are an expert or a novice.

You're an assassin regardless of whether you just shoot at someone, or have an elaborate plan for it, same as you're a murderer either way, regardless of if it was planned or just on the spot. The intent is what's important, and I'm pretty sure this guy intended to kill President Obama.

Interesting. Just today I was writing a speech for my public speaking class about the consequences of the Citizen's United case and I was going to mention something about the 2012 race with Obama running but I stopped myself when I thought "well, you never know, he could die before the election." (I think that way about a lot of things, I really don't like saying stuff like "See you later" and such to anybody 'cause I'm never sure I will see anyone later.)

The same could be said about John Hinckley, Jr.

Didn't know that College Republicans had temptations to assassinate:

Hours after Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 21-year-old Idaho man for allegedly firing a semi-automatic rifle at the White House, the top student official for the College Republicans at the University of Texas tweeted that the idea of assassinating President Obama was “tempting.”

At 2:29 p.m. ET, UT’s Lauren E. Pierce wrote: “Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012.”

Aaaaaaaaaaand this is why no one likes college republicans.

Come on, that was a joke. Perhaps not a very good one, but since Obama was never in danger I see no reason to see this as anything offensive. Calling him the worst president ever is ridiculous... but I think that is part of the definition of a Republican.

And I'm happy that he has been able to represent my university so well!

I hate people who can't tell the difference between humour and passive-aggressiveness.

This one's for real guys. Some dude cracked open a white house window and fired shots in. The commander in chief is safe but you guys think this dude is a terrorist or just a really disgrunteld guy?

He didn't crack open a window and fire in to the house, he did a drive-by, with a few of the bullets hitting a window and cracking it.

I don't see this as anything big. Just a nutter with a poorly thought out plan.

I know, I hate people who make jokes.

A joke generally requires it to be funny, or witty.

Something that Republicans never seem to grasp, that.

Sadly, you aren't the judge of all jokes. Other people can determine their level of funniness.

So how come nobody is really that outraged or surprised over this? I'm getting a "Meh, the white house was shot at, no big deal" vibe from Americans.

Am I just misinterpreting? I swear if this happened 10 or 20 years ago and the white house was shot at it'd be a much bigger deal and everyone would be up in an uproar. Did 9/11 really raise the bar so high on anti-American action that shooting at the white house doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore? Or is everyone just so chill about it because it's Obama and he can handle that crap?
