Here's my first attempt to deisgn a more realistic european city graphics. It annoyed me to see a brand new city at the start of each era. In Europe, modern cities still have buildings from feudal times ! So, my city grows and evolves by adding buildings and replacing just a few old ones.

version 2 :
- cities are brighter ( tested in game )
-I added some roman buildings in ancient era bigger cities to create gallo-roman cities

City graphics :

With walls :

I also designed it in a northern-french-walloon style because it's the style I live in : major cities have a belfry, walls are made of grey-blue stone.

and here is the version 3.1

euro_ma4.jpg

Ancient era : it's a gallic village growing to gallo-roman city ( guess what was my model of gallic village :D )
Middle age : it's a standard village for northern France or Wallonia. When it grosw, it builds a belfry ( model : Tournai ) and a church. If it becomes a big city, the church becomens a cathedral ( model : Amiens ) The little monument on the central square is the "peron" from Liège.
Industrial era : the middle-age city isn't destroyed. They build factories, a coal mine and workers houses AROUND the old core.
Modern era : industrial houses are replaced by modern buildings, in a neo-mosan style
walled version have ditches

I really hope you enjoy because I feel like playing with my city :D

They're good :goodjob: .

With regard to the European cities, it's the ancient era ones I hate the most. I don't know what I'd change it to though....

I think these are excellent. A little dark, yes, but nothing that a few slight touches from PSP can't fix. Good job. :)

Thank you for your comments :)

I'll make it brighter, that's not a big problem.

I don't like the ancient era, but I jhad to keep it because I didn't know what to do... But I have an idea : a gallic village growing to a gallo-roman city.

I made a new version with :
- brighter cities
- gallo-roman graphics for ancient era

I'm working on a totally new version using....well, let's say it's gonna be a surprise ;)

Why is there a scy scraper in the middle ages?

It's not a skyscraper, it's a belfry

Belfries where the symbol of new liberties in the late middle age in the low countries ;)

They're excellent! I like the idea of the Gallo-roman cities! And the industrial era has been definitively improved!!! :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Maybe in the modern age there should be more skyscrapers. ;)

I finished middle age, industrial and modern graphics for a new european set. And with brand new buildings. I could post it now but Im not statified of the ancient era :( I'll work on it these evening.

And, actually, I don't like skycrapers. ;)

MaisseArsouye, these are quite good! This is a very good replacement to the other European cities. I noticed you said you were still not happy with everything, and you were still working on them, so I wonder if you'll listen to my suggestions:

For the ancient era, to make the cities more like roman gaul, you could make the european buildings a brown colour to match the roman ones, or maybe just a bit darker. I always thought the ancient european cities just looked like a pile of rocks.

For the modern era, I know you said you didn't like skyskrapers, but it would look nice if you added some modelled after Frankfurt am Maim, Germany (it has very nice skyscrapers)

And if you were still going to do improvements after that, the only other thing you could do before it looks perfect would be to make the middle age, industrial age, and modern age cities look a little less alike.

Your cities look wonderful anyway, though, and they are much, much better than the old ones. I was hoping to combine European and Mediterrenean culture groups to make room for a new one, and now I have city graphics to use! I can't wait to see your next works! :goodjob:

Thanks for your comments, RedAlert :)

I saw your message just after posting my BRAND NEW version 3 ( in post #1 ). I think some of your comments allready have an answer ;)

I'll stop working to get on an african city project. I'd like it to have a Timbuctu look.

I think these are superior to Firaxis' European Graphics.

What alot of people don't realize is that in European countries, the build things to last. This was true in America as well until around the 1950s or so, when building was taken over by corparations and building companies. If you live in America, or visit here, take a look at the older homes(Some were built in the early 19th century), and compare them with the newer ones. You'll notice a huge difference.

Both versions are so much better than the Firaxis type! I'm going to download them when I get home!

MaisseArsouye, I decided to try and make your version 2 ancient city's buildings have all the same colour. It was basically my first time doing any sort of graphics, so I didn't really do much. Here's a preview, anyway, so how did I do? Does it look good?

Oh yes this is a good work! Now the temples fit well in the Celtic-european village!
