Civ IV to ship before Halloween!?!

I had the impression they were only mentioning this prescheduled release date as a sidenote not as a headline to maybe calm down worried investors, which your assumptions would imply...

Today's earnings announcement also contained bad news about another of Take-Two's controversy-courting games. The company revealed that Bully, its PlayStation 2 and Xbox prep-school fighting game, will now miss the all-important holiday season. Once scheduled for a fall 2005 release, it is now scheduled to ship during the second quarter of Take-Two's 2006 fiscal year, which runs from February through April 2006.

Gamespot

Stilgar, investors despise losing money. "Only losing 28 USD million and not 40 USD million" is not how we see it. We want the black numbers not the red.

what's the point?
I can counter that:
The company now expects $1.22 to $1.27 billion in net sales and $0.85 to $0.90 in diluted net income per share for the fiscal year ending October 31, 2005
GAMESPOT!

I've got a portfolio, too... You won't loose, if figures are right! And this is stated in advance of the release-date notes and knowing about hot coffee impact. And if you know your stock-rules, the "loss" due to GTA has been estimated and put into account concerning price of shares...

If I would have take2 stocks (are they a publ.comp.??) I would sleep very fine without having civ4 being pushed into a bad start.
On a sidenote: Did everyone forget Soren and Barry and all the Firaxians stretching the fact that they are playing decent civ4 games for quite a while already?!?
I have to run now... :p Bye until tomorrow..

There will always be bugs, some minor, some moderate. Bugs aren't always all or nothing either. Meaning that some bugs will only show their ugly heads on some configurations of computers (this most often related to graphical issues). No matter how much play testing they do, they will not squash all the bugs present in the game. I can't think of one game I've played in the last 5 years that hasn't had at least one major patch after release.

That being said, if they are confident enough to move the release up a couple weeks, then Civ 4 must be VERY close to finished. I'll be happy to have it in my hands early.

Ups and downs / bull's and bears... :D

Ok, peace-negotiations: YOU think the release was pre-scheduled due to economic concerns, I think due to the earlier finish of the final product...
Fair???

(Man, I really have to run now) Cheers to Spain from Germany!

As I posted before, investing is not all about numbers there's a lot of psicology involved.

Some of my best buys have been because I planned ahead (and was lucky) and thought the market might go that way before it actually did. Some undervalued stock, a buried real estate gem neglected by all ...

The market might have priced in the loss but "expected results/returns" can't compete with a 28 million USD loss, that's REAL.

As I've posted before, I hope both Firaxis and T2 make plenty of money.

All I know is that I want to continue to play civ games well into this century. I want the franchise to endure with quality.

There was mention of scenarios to show off some of the new features. A WWII scenario was mentioned.

I've preordered the Civ4 about two weeks ago. Today the shop e-mailed me that the game will ship 21st October. I live in Finland. Hope that's true.

Sehr gut freund. ;) Tschüs.

I am quite comfortable with the earlier release. It seems Firaxis already has had the game mostly ready for a long time. It should be stable now.

However, I'll be on vacation abroad for the entire October and be back in early November, so I'll catch up later.

When I heard that Take 2 would be the company that would publish and distribute Civ IV, alarm bells immediately rang through my head. I knew Take 2 had a reputation of publishing violent and sometimes controversial games, I wasn't sure how well they could handle a respected, intelligent, and sophisticated brand such as Civ. However, as I followed the tidbits and screenshots that were released, I kicked myself for doubting. Sid, Soren, and the Civ team produce quality games and from what I understand, are quite fussy. I think if we reflect back on the amount of time we have all spent playing the various Civ games, it is a testament to the quality of the games made.

I don't think the Civ team would allow a product that isn't complete to be released. That may be naive but my sense is that they wouldn't. I don't think we should be pessimistic about the accelerated release date, but then again, let's hope the Civ team doesn't let its fans down by bowing to Take 2's financial pressures.

I don't blame anyone for being apprehensive about the early release date, Take-2's motives, the amount of bugs involved, etc. We have all been there too many times to doubt that these are real problems.

I for one plan on buying the game anyway. It will probably take me longer to learn how to play the game well than it will take to work out the major bugs. I welcome the early start, as I will need all the extra time to practice for those games of the month!

What are their alternatives? Say no to Take 2 and not get paid and lose the opportunity to make Civ 5? I think you underestimate a publisher's true power over developers.

I was initially excited to see that a company like Take 2 (which had shown they cared about their products) took over the Civ franchise, but this proves they're just another Atari.

Don't count yours eggs before they hatch :)
Even if it's possible that Civ-4 will be more buggy if it's released in October rather than December, when don't know if it's true and how much it will be.
