Egypt - Antiquity Age Civilization Discussion

My actual favorite Egypt change is that we’ve moved away from the War Chariot (Maryannu) and finally get to have a different Egyptian unique unit. Medjay is a good choice.

We could also add what future civ choices are tied to the civ? Although I think this is the only one we actually know so far

do the medjay become the assassins in the exploration era?

If spies were making a return, I would have preferred Medjay to be that with a bonus to assassination missions, but espionage probably isn’t even a mechanic until the Exploration or Modern Age
another knock-down effect of the new system is not being able to get these things early without it being absolutely broken, i suppose.

What is Medjay actually? a kinda conscript?
And how to pronounce it? 'Met-Jei', 'Met-Jaai' (long vowels of '-a-')
It's an elite police force originally from Nubia. And the Egyptological pronunciation is "meh-jye" rhyming with rye. /mɛʤai̯/

When I first heard Potato McWhiskey saying it, I thought he was saying magi.

Egyptian Shinsengumi or Blackshirts huh?

it is quite a funny that elite cops became simple footsoldiers here. in previous game War chariot (can't remember the actual egyptian term for it) is a UU.

and pronounciation is 'Meh-Jai'?

Egypt - Antiquity Age Civilization

Kemet, the fertile band of the Nile floodplain, is the heart of ancient Egypt. Its over five thousand years of history have been sustained by the river and the life-giving silt that it leaves, building layers of trade, conquest, and the monuments to immortality that were its wonders. Its riches were legendary – and tempting. Egypt fell to Persia in 525 BC, but the Nile still flows.

Hatshepsut is an early 18th Dynasty New Kingdom Pharaoh (great choice).
- She was actually blonde.
- Wore her hair in hard braids as was the custom of the time.
- As "Pharaoh" she also wore the Pharaoh Beard whilst wearing the nemes.

Other points:
- Hatshepsut ruled 'Kmt' (or as Greeks translated it, Kemet), not Egypt. Egypt is a modern thing. Kemet literally means "The Black Lands".
- During Hatshepsut's rule there was no "Amun-Ra". Amun and Ra were separate till after the Bronze Age Collapse during the Third Intermediate Period.
- Amun was the ruling God, responsible for creation. Ra was the sun God, responsible for lighting the day.

It is really out of place to use the Pyramids, and Amun-Ra, in what is in all other ways, a Kemetan New Kingdom Civ.

During the Middle Kingdom the old records say the Medjay were a nomadic tribe in the Nubian desert. They were usually employed for "the hard work" in military campaigns as they were fierce fighters. Ahmose used them as special forces during the assault on the Hyksos at the end of the 2nd Intermediate. During the New Kingdom they were employed as special forces, to police and act as high-skilled response units. Specially useful during Libyan and Sea Peoples raids, and by Akhenaten against Amun High Priest militants.

I think this is a good choice unique unit.

My first thought is to ask if that's where the word magus/magi in Europena languages came from?
It piqued my interest because I thought they'd changed the subject to Persians. The Magi were Persian priests. That's the origin of words like magic and mage.

To add to this, the Magi were much like the Levites in that they were a specific clan within the Persians (more properly, Aryans) whose job was the priesthood. By the Sassanid period, though, they were no longer a specific clan and referred specifically to Zoroastrian priests (the status of Zoroastrianism in Achaemenid Persia is extremely unclear). And yes, this is the source of mage and magic because the Magi were said to be astrologers and sorcerers.

I feel like this is kind of misleading. Egypt and Kemet are the same place. Egypt is not a modern word; it is really old. It's an example of synechdoche. It comes from the Greek transliteration of the ancient Egyptian name for Memphis. It came to be the name for the entire country. Egypt = Kemet. One is an endonym and one is an exonym, that's all.
- During Hatshepsut's rule there was no "Amun-Ra". Amun and Ra were separate till after the Bronze Age Collapse during the Third Intermediate Period.
This is wrong. Amun-Ra was syncretized by the time of the 11th Dynasty, far before the New Kingdom.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using the most iconic things in Egypt. The civ is supposed to represent all of Ancient Egypt, not the snapshot of Hatshepsut's reign.

Remember, leader and civ are totally decoupled. Egypt exists without Hatshepsut in Civ 7. The assignment of the Pyramids as the associated wonder belongs to Egypt, not Hatshepsut.

And it stuck around. Αἴγυπτος is also the source of "Copt."

This might be very picky, but I just wish that the Obelisk in the Egyptian city would have an Egyptian base and not a Roman one...

And while a Mastaba is a good choice, I wish they went with Per Djed instead for the name (not too late!). And I also wish they would just visually depict one, even if it doesn't look that impressive from the outside. It would feel much better than this apparent fantasy building.
