How conservatives have evolved

Is Obama a (US) conservative?

Well in the case of the Republicans becoming more extreme, you can actually graph it:

How the heck are the late-1800's Southern Democrats ranked that Liberal?

Looking at the methods used it looks like it's a measure of polarisation rather than "liberal-conservative" which means it's not so much "liberal" as "very not-Republican" back in that era. It can really only be said to represent left/right since the realignment.

That was rather rude.

By electing a bough pol who's openly opposed to freedom, liberty, and decency? :crazyeye: Romney is sold out to the highest bidder. You'll get nothing other than corporate cronyism and pandering to the worst elements of society from him.

Meh, whatever, you still got an improvement over Obama even if you are right.

"Your arguments against Romney are good, so I have to paint an even more ridiculously bad picture of Obama!"

I detest Mitt Romney, who is a dishonest liberal flip flopping snake. You can find plenty of posts of mine here to flesh that out.

But we are comparing Romney to Obama which is a horse of a different color. Its like comparing Robert E. Lee to Ghengis Kahn. Lee might have been tainted by the culture he sprang from but he was one of our own, not a stinking nomadic destroyer of civilizations.

More prosaically, Lee was a failure and Chinggis was a success.

Huh? Why is electing a figure who claimed to have pride firing his workers, (which if done would in turn will mean those workers will not spend, causing greater economic error) be the correct option? I am sorry but the American conservatives... they make the Tories in the UK look like liberals and that is not a good thing, especially since calling me anti-Tory would be an understatement.

There is a political cartoonist in Canada who has been eying the matter. Here is a article on the Republican’s extremism's impact on their hope of being elected. It "slightly" old but it is reflective on the matter.

Off topic: Lee versus Khan? Forgive me...Ghenis Khan was a great leader! The Mongrel Empire were kind to those who surrendered to them and was actually were slight frontiers for women rights. The brutality can be noted but remember the “honour” of the Crusades, the general public executions in the periods, such and such. This is not I trying to clean Khan's brutal acts but placing them in context of the periods. Plus he was behind giving messengers the right of not being killed when doing their services... even if it costs a nation who made the mistake of killing one of the Khan’s messengers.

So Romney is Lee the failure and traitor and Obama is Ghengis, the hero of his people?

Free because of Romney? Oh please.

Robert E. Lee was a better man than ANY of the others you listed there. He despised slavery, and actually considered joining the North before going South to defend his own state. And he was an amazing leader. I honestly don't see what you can really say against Lee other than perhaps he picked the wrong side.

Lee was a pretty standup guy in person and a skilled officer, but he was shortsighted and foolish in his unconditional support of Virginia and wound up in the service of an objectively evil military organization. A bit like Rommel, but without the part where he grows the stones to try to take it down from the inside.
