A Huge Thank You Rob! He's wonderfully villainous looking, and yet quite dapper as the character John Devil certainly would have been.
For the uninitiated: John Devil, a.k.a. Jean Diable, Henri De Belcamp, "The Quaker" and presumably hundreds of other aliases, was a character in Paul Féval's novel
Jean Diable (1863), one of a series of books chronicling
Les Habits Noirs (The Black Coats), a criminal organization that, he wrote, originated in Corsica, spread to Europe, and was known in England as "The Gentlemen of the Night". While there is a vigorous
contemporary debate about whether
Jean Diable was the world's first Detective novel, featuring the first known example of a police detective protagonist - Gregory Temple of Scotland Yard - it is nevertheless indisputable that John Devil is the first sociopathic criminal mastermind to appear in print, and his elaborate plot to rescue Napoleon and conquer the world using (what was at the time) the cutting-edge technology of his day is the first example of the sort of epic scheme we've come to expect as a matter of course from later super-villains from Prof. Moriarty to Dr. Doom.
You can find the Lost Worlds Steampunk Mod's description of the Black Coats >
here<, and there is a link at the bottom of that article for those with further interest in this fictional 19th century mafia.
Again, my sincere thanks for this marvelous and spot-on leaderhead, Rob; the Steampunk Mod would have suffered from the lack of it, and conversely, has been significantly brought closer to completion because of it's creation!
