I'm currently working on the tricky fortify animation, involving the switch from high-heels to no-heels. I think now I'll keep the heels away for all attacks, and have Rex take a step back to absorb the recoil of the Rail Gun. Otherwise I'd need to give 2 fortify animation options.
I also tried having the heels drop during the rail gun firing and act kinda like springs, but that didn't look good, so I just had the foot under the gun slide back (yes, slide, not step, tried stepping too, but that required rotating Rex, which pulled the railgun away from the effects, so that didn't look good either).
Not trying to out-smart you here, just explaining everything to avoid confusion.
EDIT: That strategy I gave earlier probably isn't totally valid in normal games anyways. There was extensive modding in that game I played, I just found that was how it worked in my scenario.
