Plan for Mosque III...

Dude...the previous building that was there was damaged from the debris from 9/11. Thats why they tore it down.

If its close enough to get wrecked by the debris, its pretty darn close.
Dude, the Burlington Coat factory the Mosque will be replacing is still there. Did you forget? Muslims are already using it as an auxillary prayer space.

@Mobby: Your justification for opposition to the mosque is like saying sexual harassment is justified because the victim is hot.

I had thought it torn down. Ah well. But it was indeed close enough to be damaged by the WTC fall on 9/11 wasnt it?

I'm not even sure why we're talking about this; is that the metric which we're using to determine the boundaries of the sacrosanct area? If that's the case, then why aren't we demanding for the closure of the various shops, hotels and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero? Surely they would also be considered disrespectful under this logic?

Damaged, likely. But not signifigantly more than the rest of Manhattan.

I mean Rudy Giuliani's love nest was destroyed by the 9/11 attacks and yet no one has suggested we cut off his supply of viagra.

No Muslim is allowed to pray at a site damaged by the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

Gee Mobby, you might wanna warn the Pentagon!

Amid flaring political debate about a proposed New York City mosque near Ground Zero, there has been little commotion about the Pentagon's chapel where Muslims can gather in daily prayer near where a hijacked jetliner struck the building Sept. 11, 2001.

I guess thats a 'yes'...
Sure it was damaged. And now we get whining that it is being restored to productive use. Perhaps we should put the community center group in charge of restoring actual ground zero since they seem to have their act together better than the current owners of the actual ground zero plot of land.

It's pretty representative of America when a comedy site makes much more pertinent and intelligent points than the populace at large.

*cough*

Oh who cares about the bloody Irish?!

Would I be right in saying that your objection is based solely on the fact that it is opposed by a majority (according to whatever it is you're citing)?

So would I be right in thinking that you would advocate a system under which each issue was decided entirely upon the basis of public opinion?

Mobby, you still haven't replied to this. It would help clear up your opinion for me. :)

You still haven't answered the question, how do you expect to affect the mosque's funding from groups that have consistently spoken out in favor of the mosque. You agree that this is the only thing that your protesting can even attempt to affect about the mosque, so it would nice if you elaborated.

When you say that you oppose the Islamic center because protesting against it will generate controversy that will negatively affect Muslim/Non-Muslim relations, you're being kind of disingenuous by supporting the protesting part yet opposing all the rest.

Spoiler :
I agree with you when you say that the mosque shouldn't be constructed, but have less vain reasons, to wit, mosque = religion building = religion spread = more ignorance. The reason this is in a spoiler is so the thread doesn't derail.

I thought it was?;)

Seriously though, no it isn't, he's opposed to it because its offensive, its a different issue.

Well – I find it offensive that people find this offensive. Therefore these people should stop being offended so that I can protect my delicate sensibilities.

It is not offensive. There is no way around this. If someone finds this mosque offensive, it is their own issue and has nothing to actually do with the people who want to build the mosque. Much like someone who is driven to harass someone because they are hot has nothing to actually do with the victim.

Why is it offensive?

I meant that he thought it was offensive, and I happen to agree, and while I don't think its the reason these Muslims are doing this, it is Muslim custom to build a mosque near a great victory.

The majority of Americans polled think it is. That is not enough reason that the government should step in, but it is enough reason for the owners themselves to reconsider.

I think your sig is pretty funny though;)
