Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

Sheep and goats poop all the time and even while walking. IIRC very few mammals pay attention to cleanliness of their backsides.

Write yourself a note.

Tasty treats are good for you, in moderation. Unless your idea of a tasty treat is Brussels sprouts.

Then it's just as well when you forget you have them.

Tried Cherry Timbits.

They're dry and tasteless. I should have gone with the strawberry ones, as those are really yummy.

Terrible sleep last night. Still 48min of deep which is not bad considering the total (sometimes I get 6 hours w under 30 deep)

Oh well, got up, took the sun, did a lil jog w my giant shadow and must put on a good face for first day on my 46th year

I was reading a newspaper article just now in the physical newspaper (yes, I am that old) and what annoyed me is the realization that the bloody thing is 99% filler. I mean that literally. A whole page of text with small font letters and it only contained maybe two short sentences worth of actual information. Everything else was just padding. I have the modern news so much.

They should all be crucified on the tree of woe.

So in my wanderings around FB, I added another group to my list. And now, in the midst of atheist groups, Carl Sagan, Shakespeare, medieval history, Star Trek, needlepoint, and provincial politics, this is what's been running through my head for the last several hours (courtesy of a 1970s pop culture group):

Spoiler :

There's nothing wrong with the song... if you're 9. Maybe 10. It was a fun show, back in the mid-'70s. The music is cheerful. But even now, once that theme song gets stuck, it stays stuck, and is disconcerting to have it running through my mind when I'm reading an article about Carl Sagan or Tudor history.

This is not so much a rant as I'm over it, and it was sort of my fault, but on a day trip excursion to Sintra (about an hour by commuter train from central Lisbon) I ended up walking about 18.6 km on a day when it was especially sunny with little cloud cover.. There was a lot of up and downhill walking; I basically walked from hilltop palace, to ruins, to palace, etc. over the course of the day.. without any breakfast or lunch in me aside from a measly muffin.

I ended up getting some form of heat exhaustion or stroke, not sure which.. My doctor confirmed it today. I also suspect I just basically tired my body the hell out, and ended up paying for it. My grand total walking distance on my 3 week long Portugal trip was just under 200km.. so I'm not surprised. Lisbon and Porto especially have a lot of hills and a lot of up and downhill walking, which likely contributed to the toll on my body and spirit.

The next day I was basically feeling super tired, my mind wasn't working properly, my body was aching all over, my nose got stuffy, and I started coughing.. I took it easy over the next day, and the day after that had a scheduled train ride to Faro, in the southern part of the country. I checked into my hotel, which thank god had AC, and stayed in bed for like 7 hours, with the AC blasting, while I consumed water from a large bottle.. It helped a bit, but the next day even I had some shivers, even when it was 20C+ degrees out, whenever it got a tiny bit windy.. I wasn't sure what was happening at the time, but I suspected that I cought something and that I might have gotten some form of heatstroke/exhaustion, but wasn't really sure. Either way, I took it easy, and tried to stay out of the sun. Took some time to explore the city, but didn't do nearly as much as I had hoped.. which is okay, sometimes you just need to look after yourself.

That evening I noticed a nasty rash breakout on both of my arms! I googled all my symptoms and at that point was pretty much convinced it was some form of heat exhaustion/stroke, potentially coupled with a cold I might have picked up. Fortunately my first aid kit was action packed with all sorts of drugs and cremes, including a strong creme that fought off the rash nicely. That's when the ear aches began, which is the one symptom that stayed with me the longest and I am now finally getting fully over. Taking Aleve helped the most with that.

The one positive is that I was able to look after myself well enough to actually explore Faro to some reasonable degree and have a good time there.. and by the time I got to Porto, I was feeling much better, although I am still recovering from all this to some degree. I am mainly tired now though, most of the other symptoms now gone.. but I will never forget this and will have to get a better sunhat for future adventures in the sun.

Me and my mom had to put the dog down.
The dog was going to be 16 in october, had severe arthritis, dementia, bladder cancer, was nearly blind and may have been deaf. So i guess it was time......

Hard to do.

Heat stroke would probably have landed you in the hospital. If this ever happens again, see a doctor ASAP (I assume you have health insurance on your holidays?). Seriously, heat exhaustion/stroke is nothing to plow through. I had symptoms of heat exhaustion in my own apartment three summers ago when the heat dome sat over BC and Alberta for about 2 months. Fortunately that was the day Amazon delivered the fan I'd ordered, and I managed to cope with the fan, lots of water, and not eating anything too complicated. Walking around in the hot sun can actually kill you if you don't get into the shade and rehydrate.

:( Condolences. It's hard to do this, even when you know there's nothing that can be done.

3 weeks ago I caught a bit of a cold, which luckily was nearly over when I went on holidays. Then I came back on Tuesday, and seems that I now have an allergy-induced sinusitis or rhinitis. So that's now 3 weeks in a row kinda-sick.
I don't think it's possible to figure out if I'm infectious or not right now, and on Saturday evening I'm supposed to stay with a friend of mine who has a little child.... just brilliant.
