Random Raves XV: Like Skipping Through A Field of Flowers

Apparently it's something different than what the rest of America means when we talk about "Chinese school", which is something that evil Chinese parents send their kids to after regular school in order to be indoctrinated with Communism.

What the hell is an asian school?

A school where the Asians outnumber all the other racial groups combined, no matter what your definition of the Asian race is.

What about Korean school, Vietnamese school, Iranian school, Hebrew school, and Russian school?

All quite similar; I would add "Turkish school" to that mix. Chinese was just an example.

Hmm... There weren't a lot of Turks where I lived back then, so there wasn't a Turkish school. I might add Arab, Polish, or Greek school, but I don't remember.

Why are all these schools ethnically (or at least nationally) homogenous?

This confuses me.

At least where I lived, the schools were piled up with Asians because they had good reputations to begin with, so all the Asian parents decided to get their kids into those good schools at all costs (where I lived, this mostly occurred with the Chinese and Koreans; the other Asians were much, much fewer (like I was one of only 3 Viets in my grade)). Obviously the crapload of Asians is always an exaggeration (my school was only about 30-40% Asian, which isn't as bad as some of the other schools around the nation), but yeah, it's still an uncanny amount of Asians regardless, and I can understand why a non-Asian would feel very, very troubled if they moved there.

My school's population was roughly 50% 'Asian' (if you added those from west of Burma I guess it'd be more, but they don't count as 'Asian' here). My uni's demographic probably isn't too far off that, either. I was just unaware that these places were defined by their Asian-ness.

Dachs is referring to a different form of "school" to what cybrxkhan is referring to; the "Chinese" school he refers to is not the x-ethnicity majority or plurality school common in immigrant areas, but a supplemental for-profit education center generally attended by students of a common ethnic heritge after school. Generally in America these run K-8, and provide supplemental and advanced courses compared to what is currently being taught in general school, as well as language lessons of the particular ethnicity in question.

I will say, with a bit of caution, that perhaps the reason why my school - and other neighboring schools with similar demographics - were defined by their Asian-ness was possibly because I am Asian myself, and many of my friends were Asian, so it was kind of natural for us to collectively take pride in the fact that a whole crapload of us were dumped into the same place, and that we obviously noticed ourselves before other groups. Still, I also get a feeling that the identity of "Asian-ness" of my school was also a kind of inside joke kind of thing, too, that the other non-Asians took pride in too (somehow).

Then again the demographics at my school were pretty screwed up, anyways. My school was literally about 50% Jewish, 30% Asian, 15% white, and 5% other, but regardless, most of the kids in the advanced classes were Asian (except for the humanities and social sciences classes, which were more balanced) anyways.

Apparently, though, the university I go to is even worse: almost 60% Asian.

I think it's safe to say that [insert ethnicity] School was a bane to any member of [insert ethnicity's] 1.5th and second generation (and I guess third generation or more if they exist).

I finally found open, cheap artists to commission. So far, three pics for 17 dollars. :)

And I have 83 more to spend. :mwaha:

I'm driving back to my hometown in Ohio for the weekend, to see old friends (my best buddy is about to get married), and watch March Madness back at the mother ship.

Our Asian school is only about 10% Asian, but most of our other schools are about 2% Asian.

Heh... Maybe I should reword it to: "A school where there are enough Asians to present themselves as a sizable faction that threatens the previously non-Asianess of the school's demographic and self-image."

That's because you live in the Southeast. :p There's way more Asians over here.
