The high amount of sugar consumption in America is “toxic” and is ultimately killing us, according to one California doctor – and new research may support his theory, CBS News reported.

Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of California, said he believes the main reason obese children get sick is due to the amount of sugar in their diet. According to Lustig, high sugar ingestion leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and even heart disease.

Research out of the University California-Davis is now backing up his claim. The study showed that excess consumption of high fructose corn syrup increases a type of artery-clogging cholesterol – which in turn increases the risk for heart disease.

The UC-Davis study also showed that calories from added sugars are different from calories in other foods. Nutritional biologist Kimber Stanhope told CBS News the liver gets overloaded with fructose and then converts it to fat. This fat then gets into the bloodstream and creates “small dense LDL” – which forms plaque in the arteries.

Eric Stice, a neuroscientist at the Oregon Research Institute, revealed that sugar is also extremely addictive – similar to some drugs, like cocaine.

This is huge news, and I'm surprised there is no thread on it. All of America's health problems have been identified right here. I know it isn't proven yet, but it makes sense. Obesity has went up as sugar consumption as went up, and of course subsequent heart disease etc.

So the question I pose in the poll is if this will cause you to eat less sugar. I heard about this a few days ago on Drudge, and since then I have reduced my sugar intake. I even eliminated putting Ketchup (or is it catsup?) on my hash browns the other day. I can't believe even Ketchup has sugar in it. Why? What is the meaning of this? I am going to try to eliminate sugar entirely from my diet, but I don't know if I can do that. Things like BBQ sauce have sugar in them too, and I do like BBQ sauce. Papa Johns even puts sugar in their sauce, although I don't eat there anymore.

Is this news going to make any difference in what you eat? Is this research plausible? Should the government regulate sugar in some way? Discuss

They have also found that it appears to be beneficial to give diabetic medicine to obese women whilst they are pregnant to help the future health of the child.

Nah, I won't change.

Also, isn't it an unspoken rule to not use Fox News as a source here? :p

Click my 60 minutes link. That should be plenty respectable. :p

It's a load of tripe. Tripe designed to manipulate society and force society to bend to the elites' will. They have no right to force dietary changes on the population at large.

Take all natural artificial sweeteners instead, made of coal, which have been shown to shrink rat's testicles in lab experiments.

I dont buy into it. It seems a little too simple.

Everything is toxic in high enough quantities. No surprises here.

Even oxygen

This is not news. Sugar is in everything because it's yummy, it's not a massive conspiracy to make ketchup poisonous at the expense of little childrens' health. Every single goddamn one of you knew "too much sugar is bad" before you read a news article today, don't act surprised because you finally bothered to find out what that actually means. This "news" won't change my diet because it's not news.

This is way better than what I was going to say so I'll just quote it and agree.

And no, this isn't reasonable. Sugar is not bad in moderation, it's not goddamn ricin. Just pay attention to what you eat and don't eat too much.

No change for me. I do love chocolate sauce and sprinkles on my ice cream.

This is a good one. I watched it a few months ago.

For what it's worth, diets advocating low sugar and low carbs are increasingly popular and effective -- the Atkins diet, for instance. For my own part, I approach matters from a biological standpoint: we should probably be eating what our bodies evolved to process. Refined sugar may be much too much for our system to handle, since we're not getting its sweetness packaged with actual nutrients as we might with fruit and such.

This is news? I thought the that the talk about cholesterol being the bad thing had been debunked a long time ago.

Yeah, sugar is probably worse. And that odd corn derived sugar you americans insist on using probably even worse. But the real problem is people eating too much of one thing. There are no poisons, only poisonous dosages (dimethylmercury and other such compounds not included :p).

Aww, but eating too much is so much fun!

Haven't the politicians been subsidizing corn (sugar) for decades now? They put that crap in everything, they subsidize it and place restrictions on imported sugar so it costs more and then subsidize corn.

I'm becoming a true believer in eliminating as much fat and sugar from my diet as I can, just aint got the willpower to quit cold turkey.
