...Continuing from the Election 2024 thread:

Sequel to the 1st Trump Assassination Thread:

The potential assailant, Ryan Routh, is apparently a MAGA Trump supporter with a history of mental illness and has a previous arrest connected to firearms. He was apparently disavowed by a Ukrainian militia (perhaps he was found too extremist?). He's described as a conspiracist that may have grown very disillusioned with the state of things in the US, listening to Trump's repeated lies.

He fits the profile for those kind of MAGA people that Trump speaks directly to; this time his reaction was to approach Trump personally with a firearm. If Trump had any capacity for reflection and thought, this might make him reconsider his words when he talks in public in the future, but knowing Trump, there's zero chance of that happening.

A Maga Trump supporter?

Who ... tried to murder Trump?

A man from Hawaii suspected of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump has been revealed as a long-time Democrat donor with records showing he gave exclusively to the party’s candidates on 19 occasions since 2019. Ryan Routh contributed over $140 on the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue between September 2019 and March 2020, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings. The records indicate that he resided in Kaaawa, Hawaii, at the time of the donations, and was not employed.

I guess he could have been a big Trump supporter in 2016 and then became rapidly disillusioned.

Giving money to politics while unemployed is impressive crazy. :crazyeye:

Ryan Wesley Routh put his enmity toward Donald Trump – the man he once supported but then dismissed as an “idiot,” a “buffoon” and a “fool” – at the center of a rambling and fanciful worldview that also fixated on Ukraine, Taiwan, North Korea, and what he called the “end of humanity.”

The 58-year-old, who was detained Sunday in connection with an apparent assassination attempt on the former president, protested in Kyiv after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and committed his ideas to paper in a self-published 291-page book.

Very crazy.
Can anyone find his 291 page book?

It's what the politicians want. They feel no shame in asking people with next to nothing to give more.

Twice, during the time that Trudeau has been in power, I've had to explain to them that just because I signed a petition or wrote a letter or email, it doesn't mean I support the Liberal Party. It doesn't mean that I welcome six emails a day (not a joke here) yapping about something Pierre Poilievre said (though he says many stupid and outrageous things every time he opens his entitled mouth) - and then asking me for a donation.

Twice, I've had to block that party. And it's all going to start again the next time I sign a petition that gets sent to all the party leaders. In the case of the Liberals and NDP, they will take it as a sign of support and then ask for money. Sometimes even the Green Party will do this.

They don't seem to understand that "take me off your mailing list" means permanently, unless I decide otherwise.

And about Trump? If there's been another attempt to get him, shouldn't that give him a clue that there are people who really don't like him that much? For whatever reasons.

I Read a bit of the Newsweek article about Routh, he definitely appears to be unhinged. I thought it odd, and I am no gun expert, that he used an AK 47 from what I understand it is not known for accuracy and found it interesting that he used ceramic ballistic plates to give himself cover which probably saved his life. The first shooter did not care whether he lived or died and the second one absolutely did and strangely wanted to document it on camera. One thing is for sure is the attempts are getting more sophisticated. Trumps got to realize he just cant traipse around like everything is hunky dory and make some easy adjustments to make himself safer i.e. not golf on a course that is adjacent to and easily accessible from a highway or since he is supposedly a billionaire, hire his own security to supplement the secret service security detail he has. Hes stubborn and is probably in denial about the danger he is in. Also, I am thinking about all the unhinged people on the right and when the wave of assassination plots/attempts start for people on the left.

Mental illness and previous arrest connected to firearms....
but still walking around with AK 47. This is the US.
Apparently it was an SKS rifle, not an AK-47, but yes.

The SKS semiautomatic rifle that federal investigators say Ryan W. Routh, the suspect in an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald J. Trump, left behind at Mr. Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course in Florida was loaded but had not been fired that day.

The rifle, designed by the Soviets in the 1940s with a self-loading carbine system, was found propped on a fence at the golf club, affixed with a telescopic sight, police photos showed.

This is crazy. Why make an attempt when he is going to lose the election anyway?

It increasingly looks like calling it an attempt is generous; he never had line of sight on Trump nor fired a weapon. Like in a country with 400 million+ guns and increasingly accepted levels of political violence, this barely rises over “normal day running for president” at this point.

Moved from the Election Thread:

In fact @Lexicus this time around (in terms of the assassination attempt), I am noticing something very different from the media than last time. They aren't defaulting into the "let's be classy and/or not victim-blame and/or condone violence"... They are starting to call Trump out and point the finger at him for stoking political violence. No one has had an explicit "Chickens come home to roost" moment, not yet at least, but the commentary is much sharper along the lines of Trump/Republicans need to take responsibility for this environment of political violence that they fostered.

Ugh it's the same here. I donated once, to a friend's campaign who was running for office in Florida (I live in Massachusetts over 1,200 miles away). Now I receive Florida campaign emails asking for money, quite literally every day. It's insane. :shake:

If it wasn't so taboo and in bad taste... I could see SNL starting a running gag about incompetent would be assassins constantly going after Trump and failing spectacularly every time, injuring and/or killing themselves accidentally in the process... kind like Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner... or the Home Alone movie...

See what I did there? ;)
