Although I voted for California, I am perplexed that the only New England state in the poll is Connecticut. Connecticut. C'mon.

Unless you have lived for a few years in each state, its going to be really tough to define 'best'.

Every state has good things about it.

Every state has some bad things about it.

I think I will choose to define 'best' as the state which you will eventually retire to. And in that case my choice will be where I was born, in Arkansas.

Pros:
Gets all 4 seasons well defined.
Cheap cost of living.
Lots of lakes, with outdoors type of things to do (fishing, hunting).
Friendly people.
Centrally located, so trips to places like Memphis, New Orleans, Dallas, or St. Louis, are fairly easy to accomplish.
Less crime than large urban areas.

Cons.
Very hot w/high humidity in the summer.
Bugs (mosquitos, etc.)
rural living might be considered boring by some (but thats why we now have the internet right?).
more limited choices (shopping malls, dining and entertainment) in comparison to larger urban areas.

I know three different families in Arkansas, and nobody has high speed internet in their town.

Well, you dont need 'high speed' internet to surf the web.

Secondly, depends on where you live, and how much your willing to pay.

46-way tie for every state that is not New Jersey, Alabama, Mississippi, or West Virginia

Disagree, WV is beautiful. NJ hypothetically has a few beautiful hectares somewhere.

I'll go with John: PA is beautiful, because I am there.

Exactly my point. Connecticut has very little to recommend it. All the other New England states, except maybe Rhode Island (and that's an iffy) is better.

Theige, I commend you for not including Missouri on the list. Such awesomeness would be unfair to the other States competing in the poll.

Excluding Missouri, I am torn between Minnesota and Colorado. Since Colorado has mountains, I'll let that tip the scale in its favor.

Yes you do, cuz we don't want your contagious germs contaminating our glorious awesomeness!

...I thought partisanship was bad. How many people voted for someplace BESIDES their home state/state of residence?  I thought regionalism and sectionalism died with the Civil War!

Lolwut?

Well, Missouri gave us Harry Truman. California gave us Nixon and Reagan. Texas and Connecticut gave us a couple of Bushs. So that does boost Missouri's street cred. :mischief:

No. No it doesn't.

To be fair, it at least has brilliant people, such as El Justo and his wonderful AoI mod.

...But yes. NJ sucks pretty much. I know because Mom would cross the bridge all the time to buy cheaper cigarettes there... and boyyyyy did that place stink. It took the cake on the landfill near the Staten Island Mall's stench.

I'll throw in a vote for Oregon.
