I've actually fattened the camel up a bit from what it originally looked like.

The armor is Persian, which is related to Arabic.

And yes, there were most certainly cavalry units on camels... used throughout the Middle East and North Africa on dromedary camels and I believe Central Asia and India on Bactrian camels.

Btw, I haven't seen too much comment on the Cataphract Camel.... I want some feedback!
Magnificent! Astounding! Inspired! Ingenious! Desperately needed! The people demand this!

... And it looks pretty good, too :D

The 'driver' on the camel should wobble a bit more, now he looks like a wooden board strapped on that animals back :)

Well, that was more to show the camel's movements. It's not anywhere near the finished version of the Run anim.

Well, you wanted feedback.. :p
As for the movement of the camel, could be a bit smoother, but that's about it. :)

Dom, are you doing the camel calvary too? or is it out already>?

Im hoping to use this as calvary replacement for the arabic labled culture groups.

same with this used to replace knights of those countried (knight upgrade ect..)

Dom.. any heavy armored (scale or chain) Asian ( specificly CHINESE :D ) units soon?
very soon?

very very very soon? :D :p ;)

Already been doing that... like I said, this was just a rough version. I've been trying to make refinements. It's tough going though. Unlike the human characters, you can't simply use the Walk Designer in Poser to generate movement.

If you want to hear how I've been doing it, I took the Poser horse, lined it up next to the camel, then I gave the horse a run animation and manually matched the camel's movements to the horse's in each frame of animation. Truly a contender for most boring thing in the world next to watch paint drying and grass growing.

Nameless: DyP Alternate Cavalry Pack There's a lot of mistakes with these units, however, and I plan to redo them at some point.

Also, I have gotten a horse cataphract from Kinboat, but it really doesn't fit for China... I need a full cataphract and this only covers the front part of the horse.

I'm going to try to get utahjazz's cataphract at some point and hopefully then I'll be able to do some stuff like that.

But camels and horses doesn't run the same way! Camels amble, I e their left front leg is "first" at the same time that their left back leg is "last". Like this: (the O's are the legs)

Yeah, I've seen the footage of the camel walking. I know they run differently, but I didn't really have anything to work with. The last animation I did for the camel walk was pretty crappy.

So look at the preview of the run: I should basically reverse how it is now?

Ask and yee shall receive :)

Found this description - may or may not be helpful:
"It was while watching the opening scenes of Disney's "Aladdin" that I realized exactly what made the camel's gait different from the gait of most other animals. A horse or cat walks by moving one front foot forward, after which the opposite hind leg moves. For the next step, the other front foot moves, followed by the opposite hind leg. To observe this for yourself, get down on all fours and walk; you'll notice that if you move your right hand forward, your left knee follows automatically. But a camel walks by moving a hind leg first, then moving the front leg on the same side."

And perhaps this description of the alleged simultaneous lifting of both legs on the one side is more accurately put this way:
"When camels move at a fast pace, both legs on the same side of the body advance together, producing a rolling gait."
For the animal, like the giraffe, to lift fore and hind legs on the one side while in a slow walk seems impossible for so gangley a creature. But with speed I could see it, and can picture it vividly in the case of the giraffe.

the advantage of camels over horse is they dont need as much water or they can go without it for long time.. not speed.
guess we can start thinking how to translate that in the stats...

-1 mov +1 hp?

A camel can be pressed to a pretty great speed (65kph?) for at least a sprint. And over a long passage, I can't imagine they're any slower than a horse, perhaps even faster due to their endurance.

Their truest virtues, to my understanding, is their sure-footedness in rocky and sandy environments, which the new world camelids share, and even moreso their ability to hold enormous weights. Going long without water is a bonus.

ah... so no decrease in speed then
ok.. infact no bonus at all...
only chinese units get bonuses ;)
PS.
dom, i just downloaded the Bedouin Raider...
WHAT MISTAKES ARE THERE? i see none!

it it will work great.

Edit:

dom, just a reminder.. when you do start on the chinese unit, give it heavy plate or scale or chain armor.. :D

wangshushi or someone name like that had a old post, linked shown to me by aluminum and it had some examples of those type of armor..

Yeah, I've got more than enough concept artwork to work from.
