On Consistency

Consistency in what?

If we don't consistently use the same words to describe the same things then communication becomes. If we don't consistently eat we die. Without consistency among natural laws anything resembling life would be impossible. Without the consistency of Earth's rotation and orbit the climate would be ruined.

Or are you talking about something else?

Chaos might seem complex at first glance, but it is actually very boring. Interesting things are the result of patterns and structures, which are impossible without some sort of consistency.

Make batter by mixing eggs, flour and adding milk till the "pouring" consistency is achieved.

Can one be consistently inconsistent?

What was the point of this thread again?

Ok, ok, I guess some consistency is good. It keeps social situations running smoothly. But that isn't the kind of consistency I mean. It's always more fun to start a thread with something wide open so you have some vague places to start something more narrow.

Consistency in beliefs. That's a good place to start.

Reproducibility is one of the foundations of good science.

If your beliefs aren't consistent, what are they worth?

Specifically referrng to government, do you really want to have an institutionalized system of violence based on inconsistent principles? Why should anyone accept that system?

What is an opinion worth? You could say opinions and beliefs may have differences, so do the apple and the orange

So you're consistent. Good. What if one of your opinions becomes untenable by a recent scientific advance? Is consistence still as valuable? When does it become stubborn?

I am told that it is the hobgoblin of little minds.

MY dad always used to say, "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of a mediocre mind".

That said, hobgoblins are 1-HD humanoids with the goblinoid subtype and a +1 level adjustment. :)

Did your father consistently misquote Emerson?
"Our greatest glory is not in failing, but in rinsing each time we fall."
"To be grated is to be misunderstood."
"Finnish each day and be done with it."

I can't say he did, no, but he was a Classical scholar, so his interests lay in significantly earlier periods. :)

But if life is chaotic, then how can consistency be a good sign of truth? It could easily be a sign of settling for an answer.

I don't think consistency alone can be a sign of anything. Consistency or a lack of it is a result of other factors, and depending on the context it can mean different things.

It is really simple. If something is good, doing it consistently is good. If something is bad, doing it consistently is bad.
Waging wars is generally bad. So its good that Europe chose to stop to be very consistent about that.
Making sense is good. So it is bad when your argument lacks argumentative consistency and hence sense.
