The U.S legal system is awesome!

When punishment for stealing 3 million is lesser than for stealing a hundred bucks, you could say that the justice system is skewed against the rich. :mischief:

I wonder whether the guy who stole 100 dollars would have been caught if he'd not turned himself in. Being homeless I imagine it would've been difficult to track him, and only having stolen that small amount it wouldn't have been high priority.

Wow, talk about cherry picking. We all could play that game.

And if I remember right. That homeless person has been stealing/robbing small amounts of money to get thrown in jail for food and a place to sleep for YEARS! The judge did go overboard with that ruling. but was just likely sick of seeing that same guy in the courts every few months.

Which would be worse? Someone draining your bank account or someone putting a gun to your head?

The gun. But only because there's nothing in my bank to drain. Otherwise it would be the other way around.

second, that one was a violent crime while the other was simply fraud. However, that being said, I sympathize with what you're trying to say. In the end, the bottom line is that we can tolerate crimes of greed far more than we tolerate crimes of desperation.

That doesnt seem totally effed up to? Our seemingly ingrained tendency to turn a blind eye to the abuse of position is so, so, so wrong and quite possibly our biggest problem.

I don't know what I would do with the homeless guy, but intentional fraud for millions? I don't support capital punishment, but I would throw this banker in an oubliette and melt the key. At a certain point punishment needs to scale with harm done.

On the bright side, the ceo may be homeless in 6 years and when he steals a hundred bucks, then he will get more prison time.

white collar criminals are in general not punished as harshly, although the disparity usually not that big

Only 3 years in a massage-my-back prison for stealing $3 billion? Should be at least a year per $100 million!
I would support the shorter sentence for the rich person, so long as it was in a common prison. Lets see how long he could survive. Could become an interesting reality show.

That's capitalism for you; grab as much as you can for as little effort as possible. You're just jealous because he can play the market better than you. :p

Compare these two stories and tell me with a straight face there is no injustice and bias in sentencing versus the poor and white collar criminals.

Story1

Story2

Sure maybe I don't know all the facts but at face value how is it fair that a homeless man stealing to get food gets 15 years while a white collar criminal who defrauded many people only gets 40 months? It's disgusting..

If you don't know all the facts, then how can you form an accurate opinion on whats going on? Just wondering....

The rest of the facts must be outstanding to provide such imbalanced verdicts in a "fair" system.

Wasn't an armed robbery. Didn't hold a gun to someone's head.

Actually, he put his hand into his jacket pocket and gestured with it like he had a handgun in his coat pocket while robbing a bank. Faking that you have a gun could still be armed robbery depending upon the individual state law covering the incident.

But in continuing my point about these two cases, first of all, they occurred in different states, and has been pointed out many, many times in these forums different states have different laws - and often different sentencing guidelines for different crimes.

Armed robbery is considered worse than fraud because the latter involves directly threatening the lives of others.

Which would be worse? Someone draining your bank account or someone putting a gun to your head?

Bank account. I usually don't carry that much cash on me anyway.
