I'm not quite sure who can answer this question, and my Google-Fu is failing me miserably. @Evie, or maybe @El_Machinae: Why aren't provincial/federal parties involved on the municipal level? Is there a law preventing this?

I am not complaining about it, of course. I like the separation. But I've been curious why, especially since Vancouver's elections have reached extreme bloat in recent years (our upcoming election next month has over 100 names to pick from across the gamut of mayor, council, parks, and school).

Ohgoodgrief, political parties do NOT belong in municipal elections! There is no way I'd want the UCP deciding on new bus routes or the hours of operation for the handi-bus because they barely acknowledge that people who use public transit are human, especially if they're disabled. It's hard enough to get city councilors to be sensible about these things (one year when they decided to cut off bus service at 9 pm and it was pointed out that this would strand the college students with evening classes that didn't let out until 10 pm, one idiot on council sniped that "can't they just carpool?"... hello, carpooling requires a car, and if they had a car, they wouldn't need the bus, would they?).

I take it that Vancouver doesn't do what Edmonton and Calgary do, which is to have a ward system? I'm surprised it doesn't, as it's a much larger city. With a ward system, you only have to consider the people running in your own ward, rather than everyone.

I have no direct experience of such a system, as Red Deer isn't big enough to need one (though the idea was floated and shot down a couple of councils ago).

I've heard that a problem with it is if the people running in your ward are idiots, you might be left with nobody you'd want to vote for, whereas someone you like might be in another ward and if you wanted to vote for them, you'd have to move.

You have elections about parks? We just have mayor, council, and school board, though Jason Kenney stuck us with 3 provincial referendum questions as well.

I want to appoint you to our electoral board just so's you teach them what's what.

Here we have to put up with party-line elections even at student council level.

Yeah, our parks are managed separately from all the rest. It is rather silly, and should be abolished. They don't seem to serve much of a practical purpose. Granted, we have a lot of greenspace (250+), but...

Yikes.

I'm not saying that provincial or federal parties don't creep in unofficially. After all, there were a couple of city councilors who ran for office at provincial and federal levels. The expectation is that if you're going to run for office at a different level than where you are, you need to go all the way and commit yourself to it. That means quitting your council job and committing to the campaign for whatever the other is.

One councilor did; he was running as a federal Liberal candidate. He lost, of course; we've never had a Liberal representative here at any level. He was consistently extremely popular as a city councilor, though. I remember one time when he campaigned by waiting on tables at a restaurant - and it was where my mother and I happened to go one night (she had twice-monthly visitation after my parents' divorce and we usually went out to supper, then shopping). He was also a school teacher and taught art at the county school I attended in elementary and junior high. His son was one of my classmates.

The other councilor did not do the honorable thing and resign his council seat when he decided to run for the Conservatives in a provincial election. He should have, but he decided to play it safe (fortunate for him as he lost the nomination race).

Greenspace galore. I've only been to a couple of the parks; that was in 1977. My dad and grandmother and I took a trip to Vancouver Island (spent 3 or 4 days there) and spent a day in Vancouver as well. I think we actually should have taken a week to see everything we wanted to.

as it would be expected somebody will be writing an esoteric history of the war in Ukraine . While it is easy to track the stupendious glory of Zelensky declaring that they will have light and electricity without Russians , godlike on twitter and to spot whether the lights came on after this half hour of darkness that descended on some parts of Ukraine after a Russian missile strike , one faces tougher questions .

so , did people know when he was "chosen" to be the one ? If there was going to be a war and Russians would naturally troll with their contribution to arts and the West would pre-empt this with total moves like re-naming a painting the "Ukranian Dancer" even if it had always been the "Russian Dancer" since 1906 , his method of piano playing would be an awesome insult at "culture" . This old f arts always taking piano skills as a class distinction 'cause you would never do good unless you were born rich to have one and born rich to be idle enough to practice . Was Zelensky nominated before and he developed the method ? Or was it the method that endeared him to decision makers so he was chosen ?

yeah , people do already have the answers but being idle dulls people , so ı have to find out myself ...

What is an equivalent to Quorn? Are meat replacements like Beyond and Impossible similar?

Is there a case (and if multiple, a most famous one) of a rapper being taken to task for rapping about being poor after he or she had in fact become rich?

Eminem has a line "they say I can't rap about being broke no more"

But what I'm interested in is, say, a review in Vibe or some such making this charge against a particular rapper.

Plenty of times rappers are accused of not being "real" and "gangster" and actually never being poor in the first place.

I heard that Wolverine was going to be in the next Deadpool movie and that it is going to be a MCU movie.

I also heard that Wolverine is going to be replaced with a new actor, but not until after this Deadpool movie.. and that all the X-men are getting recast and they are basically re-making those movies again, telling new stories, etc.

Which part of this is false? Hopefully it's not a case of Wolverine being played by 2 different actors. Are they going to put a "mutliverse" spin on this, if that is the case?

I think it pretty much has to be a multiverse story, yes. They've announced Secret Wars, which will almost certainly be an adaptation of the 2015 story and not the 1984 story, and have already begun to set it up - for example, introducing the concept of "incursions" in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. I'd wager Fantastic Four, the reboots of characters from the Netflix series, and the introduction of a new actor playing T'Challa will be parallel-universe stories too, each for their own reasons.

It's being more than hinted at.

If you say so.
