Alexander The Great 2

Thank you
Thank you
Thank you

I would have written sooner, but I've been at the game for over 15 hours in the last two days and haven't been able to look up yet.

I've played about a third of the way through the first game and found myself stretched way too thin, and Persian was killing me with their counterattack, so I quit and started over.

I LOVE THIS SCENARIO!!!

The map's great. I really felt like Alexander on his conquests. The biggest difficulty I've had is the large deficit each round. Starts off -87 per round and I couldn't build cities or improvements fast enough to keep up. Eventually got down to 180 credits before I had to cram down on invention credits. I've yet to get to the Construction advance.

I've had no game playing problems, except it is a trifle slow between rounds, and a little slow to load, but I'm playing it on my laptop, which only has 256 Ram. It plays much better on my desktop model where I have 512 Ram.

I was a baffled at the invisibility of phalanxes and peltasts in the city screen, but they play fine, otherwise.

As to the Units:

I can't figure out the uses of the peltasts. I've been using them as place-holders in cities, because I can't find much combat use for them.

The phalanx guys seem to be okay on defense and some on offense, but the value of a phalanx was in its united front and there's really no benefit to stacking them, and I hate to waste an army for them because of their limited offense compared to the calvary and swordsmen.

The best offensive units are the calvary, of course.

Historically, shouldn't the Greek units have a fighting advantage over the Persians? The Persian Immortals are the equal of the Greek soldiers in combat, which, if true, would mean the Greeks could never have defeated the Persians. I believe there were 88 units to start for Alexander, how many start for the Persians?

I haven't got the game enough to deal with the minor civilizations much. Didn't do much exploring once I saw there were no bonuses to pick up, but in looking for some more Iron I ran into the Scythians, who gave me a bloody nose for my trouble. Did you set up the game so that minerals are always in the same location? Because I've conquered and explored a good portion of the map without finding any Iron deposits not in another civilization's lands. So will Alexander have to conquer another civilization to get more Iron, or is it findable by exploring?

The Carthaginians, while powerful, seem totally out of the loop out on the West side of the Mediterranean. No contact until I got to Egypt. Had no trouble getting all starting civs in a military alliance against Persia, and the Independent Greeks have been steadfast allies, but Carthage hasn't helped at all, and Rome quickly made peace with Persia. More after I play it more.

glad you enjoyed it, i'll get round to bringing out a better version soon.

as for your questions yeah peltasts are pretty much there to make up the numbers but are cheap to build,
and the other nations are there to be just kept sweet while your army crushes the persians as for iron you should have enough in your lands to build the units required.
The civ advances i expect were a lazy way of mine to slow down the advances and make the player concentrate on fighting the war.

but thanks for your coments i enjoyed playing it myself thouroughly

post some screen shots if you know how ta kuffdam

Sorry i took so long to feedback on this scenario. Ive not actually completed it yet, but have managed to take all of Asia Minor, and most of the levant.
I found i was running out of steam at this point, and had to regroup a bit, before the push on Egypt.
The thing i found was, after referring to my Times historical atlas, not only was I following Alexanders route, but I was also about 10 years ahead of schedule. Maybe that explains why i was starting to run out of steam.
Maybe I should start again, and slow my advance slightly.
I look forward to dying young at Pasagarde, after conquering the known world.
All in, an atmospheric, and enjoyable scenario.

wow i did this months ago, this is the kind of feed back i've been waiting for , thanks fellas

Another bug:
It costs 0 gold to upgrade a galley to a dromon.

As a gameplay tweak, I'd change Dromons to 2/2/7. It doesn't make much sense for a naval unit (except for submarines) to have a better attack than defense. It's not like it's the difference between a rifleman hunkered in a trench shooting and one charging. Naval battles in those days were big melees.

I've only played through a few turns (i'm putting it on hold while I sleep so I can strategize clearly), but so far it holds some serious promise.

Gonna give this a shot, I've been looking forward to a good Alexander the Great scenario! :)

This works on Conquests right? Do I have to download any patches?

Look at the date of your post, then look at the one before.
Doesn't match up, does it?

What's your point? Many scenarios are compatible with all versions of Civ III.

If people get upset at this bump then they need to take these forums a little less seriously...
Anyhow, as you mentioned it's a legit bump as I'm asking if this would run on Conquests and if I need any patches.
Besides, I couldn't find a newer Alex the Great scenario.
I mean the fact that they would not have one already in a game called "Conquests" is rather suprising to me, but hey, maybe I expected too much LOL

Maybe you should take it more seriously? These boys work hard so we can play, and they do it for free. Least we could do is respect them and their work. This is a very tight community (don`t get me wrong, noobs are most
welcomed, and don`t get me wrong again, I`m not calling you a noob), and most of us check out every new post, help each other out with stuff or just ideas, so bumping things just to say "its great" or "its stupid" is not a good thing.

And as it says in the first post, you need conquests to play it, and not having patches for C3C is also not a good thing, I`d suggest you DL them ASAP.

Cheers, Handsome Axeman

Where exactly did I disrespect their work or them? Please quote me....

BTW in the first post, nowhere does it say you need conquests to play this scenario hence why I bumped this up to begin with.

Also, just because I don't post alot does not make me a noob, I've been browsing this forum for 4 years now so your noob reference is a moot point.

As you mentioned yourself my bump was a legit one inquiring about the compatability of the scenario, so pretty please, don't bust my nads about it now, k?:goodjob: Thanks!

they need to take these forums a little less seriously...
Slightly disrespectfull. They take their work seriously. Take Thorgrimm for example. He would probably "eliminate" you if you got some Fallout material without his approval :) They get mad about bumping, so lets respect their wishes and no-bump policy. (I only get pissed off on the realy stupid bumps! ;))

Simply 'unzip' both files into your civilisation/ conquests/ scenorio files.

"don`t get me wrong, noobs are most welcomed, and don`t get me wrong again, I`m not calling you a noob" - post 32

All clear :)

I was very excited when I first discovered this thread. But then I found it too easy.

Alexander's campaign wasn't easy! He was a genious that turned around awfull odds against him. I doubt we'd be able to win a realistic scenario...

Back to the topic, I was thrilled when I found this scenario! However I was a little dissappointed by the easy advances I made.

Havnt played this, but, edit the rush unit cost to 8 shields per gold from 4 (default), will make it harder to play the ai, works like a charm in every scenario to toughen the game. Human rushing tactics overwhelm the ai, in almost all scenarios. Very quick/easy fix for most too easy scenarios.

Ummmm... I love the idea of this scenario... But it isn't getting an error, and I am not entirely sure why... Here is the screen of it!

CIVAlexander2_5_ERROR.jpg

EDIT: Image is too small! It says that in PediaIcons.txt in the text folder it says it cannot find #ANIMNAME_PRTO_Phalanx, but I looked in that file and it is in there! I am not sure what is going wrong...

That error means that a media file (image, animation, or sound) is misplaced, lacking, or has its name misspelt in the PediaIcons file.

I can't tell you which file, since the resolution of your screenshot is too poor. :p
