I would have written sooner, but I've been at the game for over 15 hours in the last two days and haven't been able to look up yet.
I've played about a third of the way through the first game and found myself stretched way too thin, and Persian was killing me with their counterattack, so I quit and started over.
I LOVE THIS SCENARIO!!!
The map's great. I really felt like Alexander on his conquests. The biggest difficulty I've had is the large deficit each round. Starts off -87 per round and I couldn't build cities or improvements fast enough to keep up. Eventually got down to 180 credits before I had to cram down on invention credits. I've yet to get to the Construction advance.
I've had no game playing problems, except it is a trifle slow between rounds, and a little slow to load, but I'm playing it on my laptop, which only has 256 Ram. It plays much better on my desktop model where I have 512 Ram.
I was a baffled at the invisibility of phalanxes and peltasts in the city screen, but they play fine, otherwise.
As to the Units:
I can't figure out the uses of the peltasts. I've been using them as place-holders in cities, because I can't find much combat use for them.
The phalanx guys seem to be okay on defense and some on offense, but the value of a phalanx was in its united front and there's really no benefit to stacking them, and I hate to waste an army for them because of their limited offense compared to the calvary and swordsmen.
The best offensive units are the calvary, of course.
Historically, shouldn't the Greek units have a fighting advantage over the Persians? The Persian Immortals are the equal of the Greek soldiers in combat, which, if true, would mean the Greeks could never have defeated the Persians. I believe there were 88 units to start for Alexander, how many start for the Persians?
I haven't got the game enough to deal with the minor civilizations much. Didn't do much exploring once I saw there were no bonuses to pick up, but in looking for some more Iron I ran into the Scythians, who gave me a bloody nose for my trouble. Did you set up the game so that minerals are always in the same location? Because I've conquered and explored a good portion of the map without finding any Iron deposits not in another civilization's lands. So will Alexander have to conquer another civilization to get more Iron, or is it findable by exploring?
The Carthaginians, while powerful, seem totally out of the loop out on the West side of the Mediterranean. No contact until I got to Egypt. Had no trouble getting all starting civs in a military alliance against Persia, and the Independent Greeks have been steadfast allies, but Carthage hasn't helped at all, and Rome quickly made peace with Persia. More after I play it more.
