Decade Awards Main Forum Discussion Thread

Balthasar, what is the rule on nomination in multiple categories? For example I plan to nominate the LotM team for Best Collaboration next month, but LotM is already in the running for Best Fantasy Mod. Once something is nominated, is it excluded from other categories?

Good Question. It's perfectly fine to be nominated in multiple categories, if it fits into those categories. In the case of EFZI, it was a close call (which is how the mistake in the Sci_Fi Mod poll happened in the first place - I kept it there while I was deciding, silly me). I finally decided that, while I could make a great case for EFZI to be a Fantasy Mod, it got too iffy when I tried to justify it as science fiction. Horror is not Sci-Fi, no matter how much the Syfy channel wishes it were. And I had to draw some line between Fantasy & SciFi, if only to make my job easier. Just as an example: I also pulled the Super Scenario which was also nominated in the SciFi category, because, even though it's got my name on it, I just couldn't call it Sci-Fi with a straight face.

But if I or anyone else thinks that the Super Scenario or EFZI2 might fit one of the new categories (i.e., best Collaboration or best Mod of the Decade) it would be perfectly alright to nominate them in those categories. Many of the categories this month will be opportunities for units we've already seen to have a second 'bite of the apple', if they fit the category, as well.

Thought this was already explained?

Spoiler :
So the general guideline that any given thing may be nominated in more than one category but when it comes to the polls it will be in only one? This sounds fair to me. OTOH if something is only nominated in one category I don't think it should be arbitrarily changed just to suit your perceptions, Balthasar.

Also, anything nominated should be allowed in multiple polls for the "overall" categories, such as:

  • Unusual Unit Award
  • Best Converted Unit
  • Best Multiple Unit
  • Best Themed Unit Collection
  • Best Collaboration
  • Best Overall Mod Decade Award
  • Best Graphic Decade Award
  • Best Unit Decade Award
  • Jury Award(s)
  • Pioneer Award

Including - of course - anything that has previously been nominated in the individual types of categories.
imho
I'm with the cigar-smoking pug.
Yes, I agree entirely.

Right, I guess my question was specifically that if something had already been voted on in one category, could it then be nominated for another. But since the only categories left to be nominated are the "overall" categories, I suppose that second point covers it.

Also, what happened to the Pioneer category? Does that fall under the Jury awards?

Yes it does; that is, it should. I remember a discussion in which we said that the polls should focus on things (i.e., creations) rather than people, leaving the personal acknowledgements to the Jury. The idea of a pioneer award demonstrably falls into that category, I think.

Here it is the last week of September, a quiet month for this thread as attention has turned to other parts of the contest. I hope everyone has settled into their home/work/school pattern for the fall and will have time to participate in, or finalize their Decade awards nominations and votes for this month (there is a link to the forum in my signature below if you haven't been there yet). Only a few days left in this round, and then only another month (and one last round of polls) before the whole Shebang, the big Kahuna, the awesome massive spectacle of the Ten Year Anniversary including the Jury Awards, the cocktail reception and dancing on the veranda.

The Jury has been chosen and sequestered in an undisclosed location, and are busily conferring about upon whom to bestow the Massive Ego of the Decade.

And I've heard it on the down-low that there are other Anniversary surprises being planned outside of what we're doing here. Cool. Stay tuned.

I agree. its already the end of the 7th for me (start of the 8th to be precise for my own time.. 2 am on saturday october 8th..)

This is only vaguely on topic, but I was just thinking what a difference 10 years makes:

I was working on my mod, as I am apt to do, when I thought how small the rules editor looks. Then I realized why. When I first started using the Civ3 editor, it wouldn't even fit on my screen at 800x600. I had to drag it around just to see all of the controls, and close it with the X because I couldn't see the Close button at the bottom. Now I'm rocking 1920x1080 and still using that same window.

The clock is ticking on the Decade Awards, folks! The forum's 10 year anniversary is Tuesday, Nov. 1, so the awards polls will begin closing on Saturday night. On Monday Night, I'll post a wrap up of the awards and on Tuesday, we celebrate!

Now, we've had the Decades awards Jury locked in a small, windowless room for the last few months, where they've been alternately water-boarded and debating the Jury Awards, which will be posted Monday Night, i.e., Anniversary Eve. Only then will we let them out. I mean it.

I understand that so many folks are exited about the Anniversary that they plan to hand out candy to any kid who comes to their door dressed as a civ character this weekend - how nice!

The Decade Awards have been completed! See the results in the Anniversary Competition Forum. The Decade Awards Hall of Fame will be updated tonight with the last trophies (3 ties in the last round!) and eventually stickied in the forum.

Also the Jury has also announced the Decade Awards Jury Awards. See the Jury Awards Thread stickied in (at the top of) the Anniversary Forum. We're all very proud of it.

I will say this elsewhere, but thanks to everyone who participated, whether posting in this thread, helping to choose categories, voting in the polls, or serving on the Jury.

In particular, I want to thank Rob (R8XFT) for thinking up the contests in the first place, Plotinus for giving us a forum to have our contests in & other assistance, Blue Monkey for invaluable help in setting things up and organizing categories, WildWeazel for excellent advice throughout, and Vuldacon & the Jury - Ozymandias, embryodead, BadKharma, KingArthur, WildWeazel, El Justo, Rob (R8XFT) and Ares de Borg for their willingness to lend their names and time to my hairbrained scheme. Luckily, everyone performed above and beyond any reasonable expectations and helped make the Anniversary, IMHO, a rousing success.

It isn't noted anywhere else, but Vuldacon did all of the graphics for the Jury Thread, which are just excellent. No award for it, but definitely my appreciation.

Ah, the biased Jury Awards, how nice :satan:

I don't see how i lost to Pounder, given that i have more gfx in the database, more monthly awards etc. Anyway, i am only half-serious here ;) In truth i am more amazed i lost the last month's contest...

Shouldn't there be an article about the winners ? I thought the subforum, its threads and the thread results were merely a tool to a bigger celebration: front page article, celebratory threads ?

[Edit]

Found it ! It still think it should be stickied in the main Civ 3 C&C forum rather than the subforum and be published in the front page. Now, I'll read it. :)

I've read it, and I'll post an appropriate 'congratulation' message to both winners and award team later..

But, first, shouldn't there be also an article about the Popular Awards, summing up the winners of all the pools ? I know we can always look at the subforum itself, but while it's fun, it's also quite messy.

Is there plans for that article ?
Is there plans for a publication in front page ?

Yes there will be a wrap-up post, Supa. I was so ragged out by the final push to get the Jury Awards post published, that I just haven't gotten to it yet.

The Decade Awards Hall of Fame thread will also be updated to include the newest winners and a concise description of the contest and results. It will also be stickied, I believe.

Sorry I've taken so long to get this done.
