NOTW XXIX: Hired Swords - Game Thread

I do not think so, not in a game this size. I don't trust Nictel at all, and I think he's a scummer. However, I am obviously biased on that point.

I think: Vote: askthepizzaguy is going to be my signature from now on. :mwaha:

Also, you mention in the quicktopic that I was part of the ''innocent brigade'' and ''other bunch of players''. This wasn't actually all that true. I was scanned innocent by choxorn (or love I'm not sure which) and I was introduced to the innocent brigade. However I was strongly opposed to the way they were playing the game, trusting Autolycus after the Illian scandal (and asking me to help protect him) and also accepting ATPG into the group and taking directions from him without scanning him (a deadly sin of NOTWing).

When I heard about the Illian conversion scare I worried that some of the scanned innocents, or choxorn himself, had been converted. At this point I sent choxorn a PM essentially telling him that I was out. I didn't want to be associated with him, and certainly didn't want to follow his directions. I broke contact with him, but continued to rely on my status as confirmed innocent to protect me from becoming the target of a bandwagon.

Yes, that was stupid. I think my reason for asking him at the end was being the one to tell me in the first place, and also he'd managed to get me to trust his BS. I already mentioned that on the second to last day, TLO was the one who contacted ATPG, not me, and told him how to win the game.

And we didn't trust Autolycus, we just thought he was more useful to us alive than dead.

Credit goes to BL and ATPG for manipulating the innocents quite brilliantly, and to Seon for being so willing to put himself in the firing line from day 1. :goodjob:

All I really did was try to stay out of their way, and avoid making myself a suspect as far as possible (a job made much easier by the timely deaths of pretty much everyone I spoke to).

Also, thanks to Paulus for creating a highly entertaining game of NotW, and for giving me such awesome team-mates.

And massive props to Renata for showing such sportsmanship. It would have been a very different game with her around, not least because I never would have got away with being so quiet. :hatsoff:

Oh yeah I was wondering one thing, it was when I realised who the baddies were, because with the second bandwagon against me Winston, BL, ATPG all said I was scanned but refused to say what I was scanned as. Was this just a blatant lie or was I only scanned by choxorn before as inactive at night?

Also being a superpowered baddy on your own is awesome.

Choxorn scanned you as entering my tent that night to steal the sword. I think he even mentioned it in the thread as the first actual accusation against you.

Ah yeah see I thought you meant some other scan.

You can say that again. :) Though in the end you just would have killed me; ATPG told me I was on your shopping list for the first couple of days in any case, heh.

Seriously well played to all of you; and to Backwards Logic and Seon, no hard feelings whatsoever. It was as much my own paranoia that did it as the coincidence of your lies. For the record for future games, though, I see nothing suspicious about not discussing the game prior to its official opening!

Well, you would have survived a little bit due to BL getting roleblocked once or twice, and their plans could always change.

But yeah, they probably would have killed you, you're one of those more veteran players who's just too useful to the innocent team to be kept alive for very long. It might have saved someone else a little longer, though...

I did get roleblocked - during night 2 and another attempt was made on night 3. Fortunately for me as was invincible at night, so any lethal attacks were negated. The Illians as a whole made their biggest blunder by doing nothing to capitalize. Because of the lack of a kill, they tried again on night three but I had anticipated this (since I figured because of no action in the thread meant they were looking for something more concrete to go on, as in two roleblocked kills in a row from the same player) and instead sent Seon out to go do the kills that night.

Renata probably would have died night 2 or 3. I didn't want her killed night one since we had just had a long discussion about voting and why it should/shouldn't be mandatory. Had she died that early, it's conceivable someone might have concluded that I killed her just so I wouldn't have to vote. Usually on day two there's nothing else of substance in the thread, so had someone connected the dots it's very likely I could have been outed. Certainly the kill order of our targets would have changed - I don't think civplayah dies as early (which I think only happened so early because ATPG was still steamed/surprised at how he dismantled his team the last game).

I don't think civplayah dies as early (which I think only happened so early because ATPG was still steamed/surprised at how he dismantled his team the last game).

Actually, I generally tend to erase from my mind previous rivalries and I don't punish those who defeat me in previous games. What I was concerned with was I considered civplayah a good player who posts and discusses enough and I considered him to be a very worthy threat. I've seen him in other games, I think highly of him. (I also think highly of the abilities and strategies of most other active players)

In this case, I had a long list of very good players as threats, and in my mind civplayah was near the top. Too many to kill, so little time to do it in.

PM's, prizes, and some more GM thoughts will follow over time.

Paulus, it's been several days now, are you going to do this or what? :p

Busy? He's posted less times in the thread total than I have since I died. :p

And... I guess he's still not posting anything. Should we post the PM's ourselves, then?

Well, anyway, I'm now posting my AAR. I was waiting for Paulus to post the PM's and anything else he was going to post, but now that it's been about two weeks since the game ended and he still hasn't done anything, I guess I'll just post it now.

To start off with, here's my starting PM, read it if you want to:

Role: Sharpshooter
Nationality: Ljosalfar/Svartalfar
Race: Elven
Base strength: 2
Ability: Keen Eye - Your training as both an Undercouncil nightwatch and a sharpshooter means you have an exceptionally keen eye for things going on, in particular during the nights in which there's people trying to do things that do not go well with daylight. Each night, you may opt to keep an eye out for one person. PM me the name of the person you wish to watch.
Special Item: Elven Bow (gives +1 strength)
Victory condition: Company Victory
Personal Goal: Uncover the Undercouncil with your ability.
Background:

Like so many Svartalfar before you who had some talent for shooting a bow, you’ve been an Undercouncil goon for some time. You have been trained in the ways of a nightwatch – keeping watch over the dealings at night, shooting those that the Undercouncil disagreed with.

Also like so many Svartalfar before you, you were a victim of a power shift in the higher echelons of the Undercouncil. The old leaders that favoured your skills as a nightwatch were disposed of, and the new leadership saw you as a loyalist to the old regime and tried to eliminate you. Emphasis on ‘tried’ – there’s some less talented Undercouncil goons dead in a ditch with an arrow through their head. Still, your position in your homeland was no longer safe and thus you decided to flee and join a group of mercenaries who’d appreciate your skills. This was the Company – the leader did not deal with the Undercouncil at all, which would keep you safe.

That was quite some years ago. You’re not sure anyone at the Undercouncil still remembers you. You do remember them, however – and your grudge against them hasn’t lifted one bit over the years. It’s obvious they are at work here and you’d love nothing more than to uncover them for the rats that they are.

I succeeded in that PG, thank you Nictel for being so obviously not innocent. :p

Day 1

I checked out the thread and my starting PM. I liked my ability, realized that I couldn't be too vocal in the thread without the bad guys trying to kill me, and so didn't do much for the first day, but wonder why thomas felt it necessary to type so large. It didn't make him suspicious, but it sure made him annoying. As to the leader vote, my original choice would have been Renata, but then she went and saw the accidental game-breaking thing and left, and everyone voted for either Backwards or Autolycus. I voted for Autolycus, but BL won in the end. Looking back at that in the thread, I notice that they were both voted for by .orgers with the same nationality as them, and both were voted against by their mafia partners. Great distancing tactic, but between the one who can kill me and the one with a protection ability, I'd prefer the one who can protect people.

Damn you, .orgers. :p

Knowing that at least one of the people who voted themselves for the lead was probably a wolf (and I was right), I decided to investigate BL that night, due to him being the new leader and being, well, BL, and saw him doing nothing. Although I was smart enough to not take this as a "he's innocent", I certainly was more trustworthy of the people I'd already scanned and seen do nothing.

Day 2

civplayah and TFA both died on the first day, apparently killed by Seon and Frozen. I find it somewhat funny that the one with the power to freeze people was named Frozen In Ice. thomas was still talking too loud, so a couple of people, I think I was one of them, voted for him. He didn't get enough votes to die, but it was annoying. A few other people also got one vote for inactivity, but nobody died.

civplayah had some red herbs, which people voted on, first to ATPG, and then to Diamondeye and TForge. Ekolite made a compelling argument questioning why DE wanted these herbs, saying maybe there was a poison. He was right, and we later ended up with the poison. Anyway, not much happened today, and TForge in the end got the herbs, and I started to get suspicious of DE.

Since I was suspicious of DE, I scanned him that night. He didn't do anything, but someone snuck into his tent. I don't know who it was or what they were doing, but it worried me. I still was suspicious of DE, and a little of TForge too, so I didn't tell anyone about this. That may have been a mistake, but I don't know.

Day 3

Nobody was killed the previous night, which was a good thing. sprig later said he was attacked twice but protected by Autolycus. I don't know how that managed to happen- Frozen couldn't attack him, rhawn roleblocked BL who had attempted to kill Pinman but couldn't do anything, and Nictel could have attmepted to kill him but that would only account for one attack. I guess Autolycus must have lied and said he could tell if someone was actually attacking, and said that to get sprig's trust. Or maybe something else happened. Auto, you bastard. :p

Realizing I needed to get someone to talk to me if I didn't want to fall out of the loop and get killed by someone on the mega-innocent alliance to kill me like what happened last game, I made that off-hand silly comment about watching half the camp moving around when I got up to pee, in the hopes that it would attract the attention of someone who would talk to me. This worked, and sprig sent me a PM saying that people were getting suspicious of me and I'd get vigilante killed if I didn't give him a good reason to keep me alive. He also voted for me in the thread and vocally said he didn't trust me. Guessing that he was either: A. Bluffing, B. A Non-Innocent trying to get stuff from me, or C. Capable of killing me but probably wouldn't, I decided not to tell him anything yet. This was, after all, sprig, a great inventor of BS, and so I decided to night-scan him first.

Everyone started the inactive crusade in the thread, and a giant bandwagon came up on sithlord. A few votes were also placed on Khazaar and cindle, and Double A and ATPG voted for each other. Nothing, really. But like most other people, I was starting to get concerned about Diamondeye wanting these poisonous herbs so badly.

Like I said earlier, I scanned sprig tonight, and saw him sleeping soundly, protected by a field of some sort. Love scanned him tonight, too, and our large innocent group soon formed.

Day 4

At the start of the day, sepuku was mafia-killed, and Diamondeye was poisoned. I've wondered for a while who did that, and Nictel said shortly after the game ended that it was him, so... Yeah. Anyway, it made me suspicious of TForge, holder of the red herbs. I kind of ignored the Black herbs and Black Flask for now, not knowing their use. Sprig again voted for me in the thread, so, now thinking he was innocent and getting tired of him doing this, told him about my ability and everything I'd seen the past 3 nights. He told me he was attacked twice on night two and was being protected, and said something about his Rusty Swords. And that his PG was to protect the Battlemaster, who died night 1. Autolycus contacted me soon after, and the innocent alliance was formed. I trusted him, because I'd seen the shield he made, so either sprig and Autolycus were extremely good liars, something else was going on, or he had that ability. That's why I was so disinclined to lynch him- because I knew he had the ability, had seen him use it on sprig, and thought he was more useful to us alive then dead whether or not he was an Illian, cause I didn't really want either Love or me to die.

ATPG then made that long post made entirely of Bull accusing J-Man. Talking to Auto and sprig, I thought about scanning him, but sprig said he probably wouldn't risk doing this, and Auto said it wouldn't tell me anything anyway. He also asked about BL who I scanned on night one. We decided not to scan either BL or ATPG, but had some suspicions of them. You two were awesome bad guys- no matter how sure I was that you weren't innocent, and that I should lynch you, your BS still managed to convince me enough to not lead a lynch on you anyway. Well played, gentlemen. We ended up going with TForge, until Love PM'd sprig saying he had scanned him innocent. Well, he actually, he made some odd pronoun shifts making it hard to tell if it was him or a friend who scanned alignments, and said somewhat vaguely he'd scanned Diamondeye innocent as well. At some point it was said that he was the one who snuck into DE's tent on night 2, but that's impossible- my scan of sprig didn't see him doing that, and my scan of Love saw him sitting in his tent.

Meanwhile, in the thread, TLO started voting everything to himself and clearly stated he wanted to save his skin. Like nearly everyone else, I became very suspicious of him and voted for him. Of course, he was just a noob that didn't really know what to do, and when he told sprig about his non-existant protection ability, everybody went instead after J-Man. the herbs and flask votes went everywhere, but ultimately sprig got the herbs and rhawn got the flask.

The following night, sprig said to scan either Love or rhawn. Confused over several posts about rhawn (who sprig even said he thought was innocent), so I ended up scanning Love, who I saw sitting in his tent with a candle. Love scanned Pinman, who was immediately killed by Seon. sprig said if he was the dead one tomorrow to lynch ATPG, but he didn't die yet.

Day 5

A Snake Fang Necklace and the Mithril Sword became available for vote. (BTW, Nictel, just why did you want that sword so badly, anyway?) Everyone supported sprig for the sword, and divided between Frozen and TLO for the Necklace. And then the bandwagon on Nictel started, a combination of people being suspicious and how much he wanted the sword. He panicked and followed ATPG's lead in crapping out a big post to distract everybody, accusing me, sprig, Seon, TForge, rhawn, and ATPG, on the basis "we were working together". Nobody bought it, so sprig made an even longer post explaining pretty much all of his thoughts, revealed my ability publicly, and started the bandwagon on Seon. He got lynched, and was a wolf. TLO got the Necklace, and sprig got the sword.

After discussion, we decided for me to scan Winston and Love to scan Stuck in Pi. We talked about BL and ATPG briefly, but decided they were easily lynchable and not to waste the kill. I saw Winston doing nothing (damn it), and Love scanned Pi innocent. And then came the Illians' massive screw-up.

Day 6

rhawn used the flask to kill KingMorgan, and sprig somehow figured out he was one of the Illians. And then Autolycus accidentally PM'ed me, letting us know Frozen was an Illian as well. He made up the whole conversion bullcrap, which we didn't buy, but since he was then protector, we wanted him to stay alive. Frozen's vote on Autolycus in the thread helped our opinion of him- and then he made sure everyone knew that our list of important innocents were Love, sprig, and me. GOD DAMN YOU FROZEN, that probably got the traitors to win right there. Had Love remained anonymous, we wouldn't have been in such a hurry to kill the bad guys and made so many mistakes on the final days. And Autolycus also said in PM that BL was one of you, which we at first thought was just more BS to throw us off. You guys suck. :p Anyway, with this knowledge, we all voted Frozen in the thread, who was doomed from the start.

At night, we, like I mentioned, got kind of scared. Knowing that our roles were known now, we worked a bit too quickly to kill the baddies. sprig said for both of us to scan Ekolite so that some result would come up if one of us died. We both found him innocent, and sprig also had TForge make a poison for him to give to him, which had two shots. We used one on rhawn, who was indeed an Illian. But then the Traitors killed sprig.

Day 7

Despite our best efforts, everyone bandwagoned Autolycus, who turned out to be an always-Illian, which we managed to realize after he died. Nothing much happened today, we talked about how to save him, and contemplated going against either ATPG or Nictel to try to protect Auto, but in the end did nothing and he died. BL got the Sword, Pi got sprig's poison. And ATPG and Autolycus told me about Krill's vigilante ability. Love said that made him a useful scan target, so tonight we decided for me to scan Nictel and Love to scan ATPG. Again, you bastard traitors, you always killed the right person on the right night these last few days.

Day 8

Love was dead, which was bad. I saw Nictel entering the adventurer's tent. I didn't know what he was doing, and then BL said someone had stolen his Mithril Sword. Knowing it was Nictel, and wondering why he was so obsessed with that sword, I decided that was enough to convict him and led the bandwagon against him. BL's later post about Nictel's behavior sealed his fate. He got lynched easily and turned out to be an Undercouncil Agent, and thus I'd succeeded in my PG. AWESOME.

And then came my mistake of trusting ATPG. As I think I mentioned earlier, I was kind of frightened and desperate at this point, and with all other memberd of the known innocent group dead except Stuck in Pi and Ekolite, I figured I was the next likely target. Wanting to kill all of the remaining bad guys as quickly as possible so they couldn't kill me, I sent that mass PM to Krill, Pi, Eko, ATPG, and TLO saying what we should do. And what can I say, my suspicions of thomas and Double A seemed reasonable- they'd both acted kind of odd when they were active and never did much recently although they were online. I actually didn't fully trust ATPG or even Krill at this point, but Krill had the ability I needed, and then there was ATPG. I wanted a 5th person to add to the PM so I could get a large group on my side and kill bad guys as quickly as possible. He was the one who'd told me about Krill, and his BS was good enough for me to think he was innocent. Plus, I was following Krill's "Come on, he couldn't ALWAYS be a wolf, coule he?" logic, and in the end decided to add him to the group. With some words from him, we decided to vigilante kill Double A and scan thomas.

Day 9

Double A was innocent and thomas did nothing. Also, the traitors killed Ekolite. Now I started wondering. I knew that I was wrong about at least one person I thought was innocent. In the PM I sent to Pi, TLO, and Krill, I told them I didn't trust Khazaar or ATPG anymore, and also thought that one of the people I'd already scanned might have been evil. I was right about both. Then, of course, TLO had to go and PM ATPG anyway, and got us to think that Malakh, john, and/or Khazaar were probable wolves. One pile of ATPG's excellent BS later, and we went after Malakh in the thread, and Pi voted BL the Mithril stuff, which he got. After deliberation over who to scan, I said Khazaar and told them to vote Khazaar tomorrow if I was dead tomorrow. Well, I was dead tomorrow.

Day 10

I woke up to find myself dead. Seon taunted me with a PM telling me who the remaining wolves were. I was somewhat unsurprised to find BL and ATPG as two of them, fairly surprised to find they were a team of 4, and not quite as surprised that Winston was the remaining one. Meh. The innocents predicatably went after Khazaar, but once it became known that ATPG actually did and could train him, seemingly confirming both of them as innocent, and BL logicked TLO was a traitor, and everyone voted for him even though TLO said BL was a traitor (and was right). Who could blame them, he was the most suspicious one left- Pi was a known innocent due to being scanned by Love, BL, Winston, and thomas were scanned inactive by me, Krill was a vigilante, TForge had made the poison for us, ATPG and Khazaar seemed innocent due to the training, and john and cindle were inactive. So, TLO was lynched, resulting in Traitor victory. Damn, we were such idiots those last couple of days.

Again, you made the right choice killing me that night and not Stuck in Pi or someone else. Seeing Khazaar be trained by ATPG would have made me unsupicious of both of them, and added them to my "almost surely innocent" group. Them both being innocent would make ATPG's inactivity theory unlikely, and pointed me towards the three people I'd already scanned inactive as being the only possible remaining wolves, and told the innocents to kill them next. BL probably would have been first on my list. I don't know what might have happened when we got BL and Winston and still hadn't won, but we would have at least come closer to winning.

Anyway, good game, all, it was fun. See you all next time.

I never really thought you guys were likely to buy the conversion story, it was just the only halfway plausible story I could tell. I would argue that lynching me really was the point at which the other baddies acquired an advantage that was all but insurmountable. If you hadn't lynched me, they would have had to either spend a night bumping me off or they would have had to guess which person I was protecting each night. I was a known commodity with an innocent-useful ability. Lynching me so immediately was a major innocent mistake.

How did Sprig decide I was an Illian?

@Autolycus: That's what we were trying to tell them! Even if you were Illian, you could still protect us and still didn't want the Traitors to win. Like we said, you were more useful to us alive than dead. Even though Love revealed your ability, thus making you a traitor target, they would have had to guess who you were protecting, which might have gived us another night or two and might have won the game for us.

Our mistake was only protecting you and not offering an alternative, allowing BL to whip up the "We don't want to waste a day..." excuse.

@rhawn: I don't know, you'd have to ask him.
