Should the US Invade Greenland (Denmark) & Panama

Apparently, but they don't play championship qualifiers and the like since they are not members of FIFA. Seems they mostly play Iceland and Faroe Islands. If Greenland goes independent they likely will enter FIFA.
They have recently applied for CONCACAF membership, though. Other sports teams of theirs play continental and even pan-American tournaments as well.

remember they are a modern tech state with western media and such, and there's just not a lot of that made in greenlandic or danish, which is a big reason us smaller countries are often good at english.
Yes, but the comparatively high levels of profficiency in English in Nordic countries is something that predates the Internet era.

i actually didn't know. i know my parents speak english much better than their generation in most other countries i've visited, and it's not particularly because of english media (like, we're not even talking internet); during their formative years, they watched swedish tv (poor sods). i presume it has been a dedicated educational effort since ww2. i also know our teaching techniques vary quite a bit from what i know of the methods elsewhere, but while i love ranting about it, it's outside the scope of this thread.

^!!! The Swedes a.k.a. ABBA were already singing in English in the 1970s.

btw when I read ‘they watched Swedish tv (poor sods)’ Humon's characters flashed into my mind.

Beginnings were humble. Benny Andersson in 1966 – lyrics written using a lexicon;

It's bit like Japanese "decoration English" these days.

i have to fill my daily quota of danishness.
Which is not necessarily bad, since what is arguably Madonna's best track of the century samples from ABBA.
And also the butter cookies.

Ah yes, decorative English. A most interesting concept I encountered in my linguistic studies.

This included a controversial large-scale contraceptive campaign. A joint investigation by authorities in Denmark and Greenland is examining the fitting of intrauterine devices (coils) into women of child-bearing age on the island, often without their consent or even their knowledge.
It has been reported this happened to almost half of all the island's women of child-bearing age between 1966 and 1970
Also, in the 1960s and 1970s hundreds of children from the island were taken from their mothers, often on dubious grounds, to be reared by foster parents in Denmark. In some cases, this happened without the consent of the biological mothers, and in other instances, they were not informed that their ties with their children would be cut completely.

Interestingly, the usaid involvement in this, as in Peru?

yep in spite of the flowery appearance of danish "soft" colonization, we were horrible towards them, often doing pretty much the same things other colonial powers did.

i will note that it is not the state of things anymore, and danes are generally horrified at this, and sympathetic to the greenlandic cause.

i assure everyone that this does not translate into them wanting to join the us. but it does translate into them wanting to be independent.

Sadly this sort of genocidal abuse directed at indigenous mothers is pretty common among colonial societies, whether it be the Australian stolen generation or US and Canadian residential schools. The goals and justifications always similar - eliminate indigenous culture/society via the assimilation of children, holding the racist assumption that indigenous peoples were inherently unfit to have families and continue their culture.

Not a massive surprise that Denmark was in on the act as well.

Like it would be cool if these places were already members of the USA, and trying to absorb them was all fun and games until the inauguration, Dictator on Day 1 executive orders, and the subsequent Musk coup of the treasury.

I don't see how it would be a rigged election. If I'm a poor Greenlandic fisherman, and Denmark doesn't give a horsehockey about me, and the US will give me $1 million for my vote then why the hell not?

The real crisis is what we're going to name it. If we're keeping it a color then instead of Greenland we can go with RedWhiteandBlueland, but that doesn't really roll off the tongue. Maybe Americaland, or Mar-a-Igloo.

I watch a lot of cruise videos, and there was a series of them where the hosts visited both Iceland and Greenland. Not one igloo was to be seen. The Greenlanders have a reasonably modern-looking society.

Sounds like the Sixties Scoop in Canada. That's something we (non-indigenous) weren't taught about in school. It came up on the news one night, about 20-30 years ago (I don't recall exactly when), and it was really disturbing. Social workers just banged on the door in the middle of the night, took the kids, and left. Most of the families were never reunited, and siblings were separated, sometimes for decades. These kids were literally sold to "foster parents" in the U.S. and Europe in black market "adoptions."

Anyway, the way the current situation is with Trump and tariffs, etc., there's quite the Buy Anything But American movement going on in Canada now, with some other countries going along with it as well - including some people in Denmark and Greenland, so that's appreciated.

I guess we can now add Gaza to the list with Panama, Greenland and Canada :crazyeye:

It's the art of the deal - Trump leads with an extreme option so that the other party will do whatever they can in order to prevent that from happening, and what ends up is Trump gets a very good deal out of it.

Alas, this strategy fails because Trump is so dumb that he thinks Mexico putting 10,000 soldiers on the border is a "concession" when they already have 15,000.

It's 10,000 in addition to the original 15,000 (who were only there because Trump pushed for that in 2019).

Just one of the insane parts of his Gaza idea is moving the 2 million people from there to neighboring countries. Imagine if some foreign power shipped 2 million people to the United States. How do you think Trump would feel about that? The hypocrisy is simply astounding.
