:spank:
A Texas mother is furious that male vice principal left her daughter bruised and blistered after a spanking, which the girl opted for over another day of in-school suspension for cheating in class.

Taylor Santos, a sophomore at Springtown High School, northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, told school officials that she didn’t know another student had copied her classwork, but school officials gave both girls two days of in-school suspension as punishment.

After serving one day, Taylor said she didn’t want to miss any more classes, so she went to the vice principal’s office and opted instead for a paddling – a legal form of punishment in schools in Texas and 19 other states, according to the Center for Effective Discipline.

Because school policy says spanking or paddling requires that parents give permission, the vice principal had Taylor call her mother, Anna Jorgensen, who gave her approval.

"I knew school policy was females swatted females and males swatted males,” Jorgensen told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth. “If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine.”

But what happened instead was the vice principal himself swatted Taylor while a woman was present in the room, despite school policy that states “corporal punishment shall be administered only by an employee who is the same sex as the student."

After learning who did the spanking and seeing the wounds on her daughter's body, Jorgensen said she was horrified.

So, this mother's principle objection to spanking (aside from the bruising and blistering) is that it was done by a male and not a female administrator.

Do you think spanking in school is acceptable? Under what circumstances? And does the sex of the person who administers the spanking matter? Should private schools be allowed to spank kids?

For the record, my first grade teacher spanked students. She was the last one who did it and after she retired the next year, it didn't happen anymore for the rest of my school days. I'm against spanking in school as well.

It is shocking that this is legal, even for Texas.

:pat:

We don't expect much out of our boy Texas. As long as he doesn't secede or start lynching Wiccans we're happy.

It is legal in nearly half of the country, including where I taught in Louisiana.

Other teachers spanked in my building, but I refused to do it. I told my students that if I started hitting them, I'd be hitting hard and neither of us wanted that. I had a few parents who specifically asked that their students be hit, and I would send them to another teacher. I wanted no part of it.

I think it isn't effective, and we shouldn't do it.

Yeah, I have no problem with it. I even made my 5th grade teacher a paddle, which didn't endear me with the rest of the class, but it was a damned nice paddle.

Don't want to get paddled, don't break the rules.

I get such a warm and fuzzy feeling from right wing posters. It must be wonderful to wake up with such a bright and optimistic worldview every day.

Okay, that's a bit funny.

But no, personally I'm totally against it. I think this kind punishment belongs in a long lost and forgotten past. I'm sure it works on some people and that there are those that deserve it, but I've heard too many horror stories about teachers who has gone a bit too far.

*Heads off to youtube to see that Rowan Atkinson sketch again*

Oh, it is wonderful. I love enjoying the sunrise with a cup of coffee, a camel, and birds chirping. Looking forward to a new day. Not sure what that has to do with corporal punishment, though.

I'm not sure if there's any better type of punishment... Psychological? Sociological? Economical?

Spanking imo should only be done between 2 consenting adults in the privacy of their own home

(serious answer).

Assuming you're speaking accurately, I'm shocked, embarrassed, disgusted, and ashamed.

I consider corporeal punishment of people - of children, nonetheless!! - to be utterly backwards and I had no idea it was actually state approved in the 21st century.

Cycle of violence and all that

I don't think it's generally the most effective way to punish, but multiple witnesses with explicit parental consent? I have no particular problem with that.

Non-injurious but painful swats and thumps seem to me to only be particularly effective with smaller children who are willfully disobedient in something that is actively dangerous. Reach for a hot stove burner as a toddler? Get a "no" and moved away. Reach immediately back for that burner? Get cracked across the hand. That really is about the only time I think that particular breed of correction is wholly appropriate.

Of course not. What rational human would ever wish that for its children?

Your post scares me. WTH America.

So if the principle took the college girl to his place it would've been ok? :mischief:

I don't get the people who are surprised. You've been in America before, right? We're crazy, violent, and fat as hell.

Granted, we're also an economic and military powerhouse and, I'm starting to suspect, the only country that actually values freedom of speech on the entire planet. So I'd rather work on improving America than be anywhere else

*Before anyone takes offense at the fat thing: I can guarantee you that I am fatter than you are.

:nono:

I feel it breeds resentment, and isn't that effective. The resentment leads to more acting out, making the enterprise counterproductive. I just think there are more effective ways to handle a child.

And I don't usually think of Maggie Gyllenhaal as hot, but that movie. Damn.

Hey, the pole was suppose to be public I thought. How do I see who voted for what?
