2020 US Election (Part 3)

I can assure you I at least am not fetishizing anything. The whole thing is just completely terrible. The choices before us are bad and worse.

Ideally, we'd peacefully dissolve now. Split into two countries, agree on the borders and give everyone a few years before the split formally happens so they can move to whichever country they prefer.
For some reason the first image that came to mind was the map from the intro to The Man in the High Castle.

Shove your ****hole talk.
Well, I guess we now know what you mean when you use the word "kangaroohumper."

You often tell us about how urban people don't understand rural or small town life, and it's true that people generally don't get how life is under different circumstances.

But that cuts both ways.

I live in an urban area in a state utterly dominated by rural and sometimes suburban interests, people who just don't get urban life and who routinely refer to my city with hostility and contempt. They call this place a "****hole," they refer to its inhabitants as "gimme-dats," and there's overall a lot of contempt and rural snobbery here.

What's striking is that, as @Drakle noted, fear of riots and immigrants is highest in places where there are no riots and few immigrants. We try to tell them that black lives matter, that the riots which aren't even conducted by protestors are far less damaging than the injustices that provoke them, that immigrants are nothing to fear. We live with these things, not just see them on TV. We know how it is with these things.

But they aren't listening.

I appreciate that he edited it. Everyone calling somebody else's house a ****hole is probably worth never listening to again. They're a waste. So he's a step up, after the edit. Certainly better than his introductory post!

I don't hate your city no matter how convinced you are I do. I realize some people may do so. They still don't live in ****holes. Have at it, mang. I'm still proud of us.

Trump's lead in GA is now down to 1775.

If Biden wins GA and NV, he can lose both AZ and PA and still win.
If he wins NV and AZ he can loose both GA and PA and still win, but then a single faithless elector could flip it to Trump.

If he wins GA but looses the rest, then Trump wins unless a faithless elector flips it to Biden.

We are counting on you to tell your parents the election already happened so they don't need to send in a ballot.
They both sent their ballots in already.

Dad requested his and mom's at the same time, and the Secretary of State's Georgia My Voter Page claimed they were mailed out on the same day, but hers took over a week longer to arrive. The labels and formatting on hers were a little different. Her information was on a sticker rather than printed directly on the outer envelope, and there was no section to fold and tear off. The stuff printed on the ballot itself was the same, but I'm guessing they had someone else print it.

Dad mailed his back when I was not around. I never saw his ballot, but assume he voted for Trump. The My Voter Page says it was accepted on October 26th.

Mom received her ballot in the mail on October 29th and insisted that I must drop it off at the local library dropbox the same day so that it would be counted. (She also insisted I get KFC for dinner while I was out, it is only a block away from the library and I had coupons expiring at the end of the month.) I checked the website and saw it was accepted on Halloween.

Mom asked me to fill out her ballot for her, due to her visual impairments.

(Her vision has actually improved a lot in the past year. Both of her eye doctors this week said that her distance vision in the left eye is now 20/30 even without glasses; before the cataract surgeries they warned us never to expect anything better than 20/60 even with corrective lenses. She still has some blind spots from the strokes though, and her close up reading vision is only 20/80. She could probably read if she tried but refuses as it is too frustrating.)

She told me to use my own judgement and fill out most of the ballot however I think it best, but specifically instructed me to fill in the circles for Donald Trump and for Kelly Loeffler.

I left the room to look for a pen and then returned with the ballot filled out and already sealed in both envelopes, not giving either parent a chance to look over my choices.

Did I follow her instructions?

Maybe. Maybe not. No one can prove that I didn't. I plead the 5th amendment.

PS - i thought you got banned? Welcome back to the lions dens ;)

I was. Trying to moderate my use of words and terms while staying firm to my message. I've stayed calm online for five days now, and haven't said anything rash.

I wonder how much Trump undermined his coup by telegraphing it for 4 years in advance?

He alone prepared the country to ignore his 'stolen election' narrative by repeating it ad nauseum all this time and lost all shock and awe value by doing this.

If he had just said he would abide the results and then on tonight, out of nowhere, yelled "Fraud!", he might have caused enough confusion to pull it off.

I hope you respected your parents' wishes.

I checked out FOX News and they aren't even doing election coverage anymore. Instead they are doing one of their opinion shows. Laura Ingram's show was on and she was interviewing the Trafalgar polling guy. I hate his smug grin and stupid bowtie, but I have to admit that their polling results seemed better than most... although I have to also admit that I haven't been following them anywhere near as closely as some of the other pollsters.

Wait, Georgia has pre-emptive run-off ballots distributed?
Oh, you meant for the runoffs? No, they haven't distributed those yet, but when dad requested the absentee ballots for this general election he checked the box to also be given absentee ballots for all future elections (including the runoff) automatically. That option is only available for senior citizens, the disabled, and military personnel overseas. Those who just want mail in ballots due to covid19 need to fill out the request form again.

You know a while back when I said that Democrats if they acted like Republicans, would have choked the stimulus, and cratered Trump's approvals. Well, it turns out that them not doing that, was a major gift to Trump.

56% said they are better off. And clearly, a sizeable number of that 56% also voted against Trump.

I think this might be a good piece of evidence for the 'Biden actually did well/overperformed'. Lots of voters seemed to take the one stimulus check as straight from Donald Trump, and an improvement in their life. But Biden got a bunch to still reject Trump.

Yeah, our economic + incumbency model had the POTUS race as a toss-up, and that looks smart now. Strong economy for the first 3 years, very strong again in Q3, and elected incumbents usually win re-election. Trump underperformed.

Could be an explainer for the Hispanic turnabout in some areas. Lots of Hispanics are really poor, so a direct cash transfer overrides more distant concerns.

And well, clearly the political winds were blowing somewhat against Democrats. But the polling made them believe it was blowing for them.

And also that Trump and McConnell are brain dead. Democrats would have given them a second stimulus happily, and this situation could be even worse.

Meanwhile, the US has just entered 116,000 cases a day, and will probably be at 2000 deaths a day in a week or so. Very dark winter. Yet COVID deaths just don't seem to matter to Americans. Just cash.

Also, Biden is now up 4 million popular votes, with plenty of votes to go. Having a quick look at most states, and it seems the remaining votes are urban areas and mail-in ballots. But we won't get a full account for another week, maybe more if there is some more delays thrown in.

For example, there is a preliminary estimate of 4 million more to count in California.

https://twitter.com/johnmyers/status/1324519897339060225

So... first report of ballots left to count in California: 4,523,196 per @CASOSvote

That would put total votes, as of now, at almost 17 million or about 77% of registration.

However, that's gonna change a bit given ballots can show up through 11/20 as long as they have a 11/3 postmark.

This number also is squishy because the unprocessed ballots report pre-dates, in some cases, numbers posted by counties. So... don't do what I did. (Too much math.)

But here's one to chew on: @CASOSvote reports 285,993 "same day" registrations.

If Trump had just shown a shred of empathy during Covid, 250k Americans could have died due to his incompetence and he still would have coasted to victory as people rallied to the flag.

$%&@ moron

He gave us the worst of both worlds, megadeath and the deepest divisions since 1860.

Good golly Miss Molly, I just got off the phone with the states. It’s like I’m either calling into Fox News or MSNBC. No, there was not massive voter fraud. No, there will not be a coup.

CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!

3 GA counties have stopped counting for the night.

Was I wrong in thinking this would be decided fairly quickly, on PA would take a while!

There was the odd news piece about Trump doing better in those places most affected by covid? States? Can't see how that would make sense...
