Civilization V Announced!

Going out 2 hexes gives you 19 tiles instead of the now 21. I guess that is doable. :dunno:

I think it just got harder to defend the boarders with units if the hexes are there too.

The economy in Civ4 is one of the best systems around. I'm concerned with how they changed it, I hope not much, or that the new system is equally as elegantly.

Combat in all civ games has sucked. So I'm glad it is stated that re-designing the combat mechanics has been the priority. This is where the focus needed to be made.

No Blake for the AI :(. I hope they have found another talented AI programmer. If anyone from firaxis is listening, remember how well it worked hiring Blake, you guys should really take a look at jdog5000 on these forums, hiring him would ensure a robust AI that we consumers demand; especially since the bar was set so high in BtS (despite all the complaining, it's by far the best AI in any equivalent strategy game).

Also hope they do what they did with civ4, and expose most of the source so us modders have the tools we need. And it's good to get this announcement as all the "When civ5" threads were getting annoying.

Looks pretty good, but I think I would rather have squares.

So with the hexagon tiles (6) versus the 3x3 block (9) doesn't that slightly limit the means of attack?

Gah! You're just regurgitating old Firaxis talking points when they've been asked about hex vs. othro grid for the last 19 years! Live in the now, man! ;)

So, excited! Sounds a little more tactics based, and less overwhelm-you-with-my-SoDs. Then again, who knows, they have disappointed on that front before {coff, coff, *civrev*, gag...}

If archers can shoot from range makes them a more interesting unit early on. Could we even see men with slings and stones too.:eek:

I'm concerned that the farms aren't hexagonal ;)

I'm noticing a lack of roads in the screens... has there ever been a civ with cats b4 roads?

My virginity is over - first post out in time like this - only happen in olimpyc period - 4 years time..))
This is the most anticipating news which i thing we all quietly expect from 2k. First expression regarding the look and hexagonal shape of the landmass is something new and unexpected but time will tell if this is the right approach. If i remember correctly i have also doubt with the look and changes made in Civ 4, but in time i managed to like it. My big wish is that the game will came to us as polished as it could be even this means the prolonged time to announce it to the market. Also i hope that many of the ideas and suggestions made by this forum site fans will be implemented by the authors in the core game. This is really great news to me and require the bottle of champain to be open in the honour of Sid the Great - thank you on my humble behalf
Berni.

Oh happy, happy day! I'm walking around work with a silly grin on my face. I have happily told anyone inquiring about my good mood that it's because of a computer game.

They don't get it, but that's ok, because today I'm a very happy forty-something lady nerd. It's not world peace, or the arrival of peaceful aliens, but dammit, I am thrilled. :goodjob:

I've played the original Panzer and Allied Generals many times and quite liked the use of hexagonal movement and design in those games. Sure they are 20 years old now, but I feel that this game will probably have a similar feel (plus 20 years of improvement and Civilization additions). If that's so, I'm extra excited. I still play Panzer General from time-to-time, hence why I have yet to upgrade to Windows Vista or 7, PG won't run on them!

My only real complaint, though, is personal: I probably won't be able to play this game until I get a new computer, and that won't be happening for a long while. .:.sigh.:.

ah man now I need to get a new computer.

I hope this "In-Game Community Hub" means they are finally dropping gamespy...

Also, they'd better drop a iPhone/iPad version, pronto! lolz
