A stellar development by Turkey! The fallen empire seized Sevastopol in very late Fall 1901. In fact, it was so late that nobody even knows what happened. The attack was so devastating and so secret that no information was even leaked about it. Some suggest sabotage.
The common consensus among us at the Paris Times is that Turkish troops betrayed Russia. Here is what we guess happened:
General Nawab Mir Farkhunda marched to Sevastopol. The City Guard was suspicious, even though he claimed to be there to help their defense. The Zemstov decided to open the city gates.
A bad move. The Turkish troops stormed in. When the gates were reclosed, all hell broke loose. They seized all the important buildings. The troops that the czar had conscripted meant that there was scarcely anybody left to defend the city. It fell relatively bloodlessly.
Of course, following that stellar victory was a huge mistake. The Sultan, pleased, sent out orders to raise new armies. However, due to his age, his signature was almost illegible. This led to concern by the Sultan's very own Intelligence Network, who feared that this order to raise armies was counterfeit. They tried to contact the Sultan, but he was away and couldn't be reached for the anniversary of his wife's death (committed suicide in the War of Ottoman Succession that led to its disintegration). Thus, he retreated to the mountains, in the poor rural city where he died, and couldn't be reached for a time. When they did manage to contact his guards, it was too late. The initiative that they had was gone. The scrap metal had rusted away; the people, gone back. It would be another year before they could adjust their numbers again.
There was bad luck for the French too. After England's humiliation in the Battle of Brest, the President died. Immediate elections were held. However, the bureaucratizing meant slow delays as things had to be filled out in triplicate. By the time a new president was elected, again, the initiative had passed. Nothing would be built or raised by the French either.
The other countries of Europe develop normally, without anything interesting happening.

The American had suffered no change in condition. He was still in a coma. They decided to keep him until he survived or died. His rantings, his ravings...they had to get to the bottom of it.
