DipNES03 - Stab in the Dark

Update 3
Winter 1901

Headlines from around the world!

SAIGON SURRENDERS AFTER TWO MONTHS OF INDIAN ATTACK.

ITALIAN COLONIES SEIZED BY VARIOUS AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

CHINESE TROOPS MARCH IN OSAKA.

--

A stellar development by Turkey! The fallen empire seized Sevastopol in very late Fall 1901. In fact, it was so late that nobody even knows what happened. The attack was so devastating and so secret that no information was even leaked about it. Some suggest sabotage.

The common consensus among us at the Paris Times is that Turkish troops betrayed Russia. Here is what we guess happened:

General Nawab Mir Farkhunda marched to Sevastopol. The City Guard was suspicious, even though he claimed to be there to help their defense. The Zemstov decided to open the city gates.

A bad move. The Turkish troops stormed in. When the gates were reclosed, all hell broke loose. They seized all the important buildings. The troops that the czar had conscripted meant that there was scarcely anybody left to defend the city. It fell relatively bloodlessly.

Of course, following that stellar victory was a huge mistake. The Sultan, pleased, sent out orders to raise new armies. However, due to his age, his signature was almost illegible. This led to concern by the Sultan's very own Intelligence Network, who feared that this order to raise armies was counterfeit. They tried to contact the Sultan, but he was away and couldn't be reached for the anniversary of his wife's death (committed suicide in the War of Ottoman Succession that led to its disintegration). Thus, he retreated to the mountains, in the poor rural city where he died, and couldn't be reached for a time. When they did manage to contact his guards, it was too late. The initiative that they had was gone. The scrap metal had rusted away; the people, gone back. It would be another year before they could adjust their numbers again.

There was bad luck for the French too. After England's humiliation in the Battle of Brest, the President died. Immediate elections were held. However, the bureaucratizing meant slow delays as things had to be filled out in triplicate. By the time a new president was elected, again, the initiative had passed. Nothing would be built or raised by the French either.

The other countries of Europe develop normally, without anything interesting happening.

Reporter Georges Bonaparte, out.

The American had suffered no change in condition. He was still in a coma. They decided to keep him until he survived or died. His rantings, his ravings...they had to get to the bottom of it.

Austria: Builds A bud
Germany: Builds A mun
Germany: Builds F kie
Germany: Builds A ber
Italy: Builds F nap
Russia: Builds A war
Russia: Builds A mos
Blame Niklas...

France gave me:
A(par)
F(bre)
I'm not accepting that. :D Remember, if the adjudicator says it doesn't understand, then I'm not accepting it! Do what at A(Par)? Nothing? :P

Turkey gave me:
Con, Ank, Smy
I'm also not accepting that.

So you guys screwed yourselves over, basically. Sorry.

Oh, before anybody complains that I screwed two people over in turn three, remember that it was all Niklas' fault, so, um, yell at him.

Personally, I would have made an exception, but it's that guy's fault.

*hides*

Oh, he wanted to screw MjM over for this:
a(tyr) s --> f(tri)

That doesn't tell me anything. I didn't know what it meant, but I put it in jDip regardless.

And...

It said something like "province m not recognized".

MjM told me that it meant that A(Tyr) would support F(Tri) wherever it went.

Well, it's not going to work. You have to be very specific. What is it supporting? F(Tri) H? F(Tri)-place? You have to be specific, or it's not going to accept it.

Well, we're both using jDip, and I copied the orders exactly. In fact, if you want to look at a screenshot, you can, although you already declined. :P

you know... thats pretty cheap LF...

in the other diplo... you accepted mine... you should of told me :(..

Im pretty sure Nikklas did not mean that.... besides... our title of our pms... should say build!

so mine was like:

France Build Order
A(par)
F(bre)
it said build .... on the title.....

Edit:
PLUS, you did not give us instruction of how exactly the orders are to be done. The Order which Austria made was of course cant be executed properly ... because that literally was a move. Build orders are different, aren't they?? cause its just building stuff. I said A(par), F(bre) it meant that there should be a Army at par and a Fleet at bre and in order to have that happened, it needs to be built... And isn't this an NES?? it should contain a rule of what to type in our orders....

There's a difference between being strict and ruining a game. Don't blame me if you can't see that difference. :p

France's orders should of course have been accepted, how could he know the syntax of jDip? Turkey on the other hand should have known better, his orders were highly ambiguous, but still, not allowing him to rectify will ruin the game completely.

First off:
He has been in four other diplomacy games other than this one. You're the one who got all mad about me accepting people who drop out; he's the one! Four games in a row!

Second off:
I can't read his mind, what are those supposed to mean?

Third off:
The original plan was to scare everybody into doing orders properly anyway. I've sent PMs off to them telling them that they can redeem themselves by sending me a PM with some proper orders. :P

Don't worry. I'm a jerk, but I'm not that much of a jerk.

i think i clearly explained the reason why i dropped out! if you want me to explain it again, just ask me..

Edit: i think ill just explain now...

Game1: I did not drop out... i joined dip 2.... and you said "ok, you're out of dip 1 because you are in dip 2".
Game 2: I was one turn behind... and later on... The mod didn't respond for like 1.5 week..... so i thought it was dead...
Game 3: lets just say some people were bugging me.
Game 4: same thing happen again!

this game however... i dont know anyone except mod and the mod said that he's not going to say anything about the game and he's just modding.

I agree about Turkey. But not accepting France's orders is just stupid.

There's a reason why there's a moderator running the game, rather than an adjudicator program--so stupid errors in syntax that anyone can understand don't matter. The rules clearly say that if an order has only one possible interpretation, it should be followed. Turkey's orders this turn, and Austria's last turn, were ambigous, but France's orders can only be interpreted in one way, knowing that it's a build turn.

And again, the moderator is here to FACILITATE the game. If you see something that's clearly an error (like not saying whether they want armies or fleets), you should PM them and ask for clarification!

I fixed it, I sent it like at midnight, give me a break.

Thanks for accepting them lightfang :goodjob:

For the record, correct orders (as in parsable by jDip) would look like:

Build phase:
Build A mos
Remove A mos

Move phase:
A mos holds
A mos-war
F eng c A lon-bre (convoying a unit)
A mos s A war (supporting a unit not moving)
A mos s A war-ukr (supporting a unit moving/attacking)

jDip also prefers individual orders for the supported unit

England: A lon -> bre
England: F eng Convoys A lon -> bre

Russia: F stp/sc Supports A mos -> lvn
Russia: A mos -> lvn

The Sultan has seized his nobles' lands. This has led to much resentment from them, and they look on the verge of revolt. However, if this can be followed up with military defeats, they will surely calm down (+5% Dissent).

The French, meanwhile, became the first ones to initiate rationing, something the French support in light of the recent victory.

Oh, I know, j_dude, I just like being a jerk at times. It's fun!

...

Plus, no harm's come out of it, right? I'm like a muckraker, I make people type proper orders!

The moral of the story: Be explicit! >:|
