NOTW XLIV: Only The Strong Game Thread [concluded]

VICTORY!!!

Here is my role PM for all those interested:

Player:NinjaCow64
Role: Chieftain's Wife
Nation: Clan of Embers
Brains: 4
Brawn: 2
VC: Might Makes Right
Major Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated and the Clan of Embers stronger than the Doviello OR the Doviello eliminated
Minor Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated, but the Doviello stronger than the Clan
Minor Defeat: Clan of Embers eliminated
Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Knife in The Dark: Each night, you can stab someone, reducing their strength by 2.
Background: You are the new widow of the old Chieftain of the Clan. You're pretty brainy for an orc, and somewhat fragile. That might cause trouble in the current climate. Better use your knife to prove your loyalty.

Also, here is my attack history with reasoning:

Night One: Zack because he was the enemy chieftian. Not a very good reason I know, but it was night one. (MMR)
Night Two: Alsark because of Zack's constant accusations. Even after I informed him that I attacked him last night, he still was adamant that Alsark was scum. (MoM)
Night Three: BSmith because of his high brawn, could be a scary foe to face if he was scum and if he wasn't we would get rid of some of the Diovello's brawn away from them, which is good. (MMR)
Night Four: Bad Player because I didn't like his VOTE:BLAH posts. Turns out I was right. (MoM)
Night Five: BSmith because I had no other leads, again. I think Visor might have asked me to attack John that night, but I think I forgot to resend the orders. (MMR)
Night Six: Topsecret, probably on the advice of Visor. I also thought that he was an easy kill because he was already damaged, another good reason to attack him. (MoM)
Night Seven: filli_notcus on the advice of Visor as well. (Most likely MoM)

I think I had a very good run as a Vigilante. 4/7 scum hits isn't bad. However, I don't want to take all the credit myself, as lots of my kills were based off advice from other players, mostly Visor's. I think the town did a very good job in this game, go team! :goodjob:

Also, I am interested in how the Mind over Matter teams worked. Very interested indeed.

Nice read. Didn't realise how close we actually came to losing. I'm glad instinct won out against Classical Hero, and topsecret/Filli Noctus. Sorry to choxorn and verarde about the mislynches. Though I really don't know why you sacrificed yourself choxorn.

I was so close to fooling you and yet it did not work out. Oh well. One frustration we had was with the other scum on the Doviello, when we found out that we could win with them, we knew Alsark had been fingered so we tried to use him as bait for the other to get and the alliance working and then what would have happened is that we would get them to target those on their side and we would target those on our side. One frustration I had was not knowing if the drink worked, so I would not have wasted a few times on those who were already brain dead.

Here is our QT. http://www.quicktopic.com/47/H/kDr8sJMBFBr

@ninja, he was damaged because of me.

Seems moderators need to approve posts I make with links...

Stupid forum.

Sorry, just found that post, approved the unapproved one (yeah, not anymore necessary, I guess).
This mechanism is to prevent commercial advertising (was a pest for some time), not to annoy our users, but it sadly also catches legit posts.
If something is urgent about one of your posts, then PM a mod who's online about it, so that we can approve it.
(now I'm out again and will not check this thread [not my area], so if somewhere's a problem -> PM)

My Role PM:

Autolycus said:
Player: Zack
Role: Boy
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 1
Brawn: 4
VC: Might Makes Right
Major Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated and the Doviello stronger than the Clan of Embers OR the Clan of Embers eliminated
Minor Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated, but the Clan stronger than the Doviello
Minor Defeat: Doviello eliminated
Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Follow: Each night, you can target someone and see who, if anyone they target
Background: You're the old chieftain's son by his first marriage. You're no longer really a boy, more like a young man, but everyone still thinks of you as a boy. Of course, that does give you more freedom to act un-noticed...

Can't you guys just enable it for people with few posts like you did with enabling PM's? You could even use the same thread for both of them.

Initial thoughts:
My plan for this game was influenced by three things:
1. I wanted to have two towns where that actually mattered.
2. Renata's The War Party. I liked the idea of one scum team that had a lot of people, but started split.
3. Two stats: One for voting and victory, the other for many abilities. This one didn't altogether pan out when I actually created the game. Brawn was much more important generally.

Role PMS

The Scum:

Classical_hero
Spoiler :
Player:classical_hero
Role: Archer
Nation: Clan of Embers
Brains: 5
Brawn:3
VC: Mind Over Matter
Major Victory: Your team's brains and brawn summed is greater than all other players brawns combined.
Minor Victory: The Doviello are eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan of Embers is stronger than the Doviello
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger.
Ability: Neurotoxins: Each night, you can go drinking with someone. Their drink will be extra strong and reduce their Brains by two.
Background: You and your comrades, the Spearman and the Bonegnasher have seen where blind leadership by muscle leads. Your clan is supposed to be the smart clan, right? Well this war with the Doviello may prove to be just the opportunity you needed for a new path forward. There may be those who think similarly in the other camp, if you can just get in touch with them ...
QT: Fire of Reason
Team-mates: Bad Player, Alsark

Braindeath made the person dead for all purposes except for posting and being able to survive day fights. For quite a number of days, drugging the ogre would have resulted in victory.

Alsark:
Spoiler :
Player:Alsark
Role: Bonegnasher
Nation: Clan of Embers
Brains: 3
Brawn:4
VC: Mind Over Matter
Major Victory: Your team's brains and brawn summed is greater than all other players brawns combined.
Minor Victory: The Doviello are eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan of Embers is stronger than the Doviello
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger.
Ability: Tussle: Each night, you can go assault someone and wrestle with them. They will be blocked, and their brawn will be reduced by 1
Background: You and your comrades, the Spearman and the Archer have seen where blind leadership by muscle leads. Your clan is supposed to be the smart clan, right? Well this war with the Doviello may prove to be just the opportunity you needed for a new path forward. Your brashness and resilience may be just what is required to handle those who would use their strength against you. There may be those who think similarly in the other camp, if you can just get in touch with them ...
QT: Fire of Reason
Team-mates: classical_hero, Bad Player

Role Block with a little bit of damage. It did not block anyone who was targeting him specifically, though it would have blocked general use abilities. Zack targeted him night 1, which got him in trouble quickly.

Bad Player:
Spoiler :
Player:Bad Player
Role: Spearman
Nation: Clan of Embers
Brains: 4
Brawn:2
VC: Mind Over Matter
Major Victory: Your team's brains and brawn summed is greater than all other players brawns combined.
Minor Victory: The Doviello are eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan of Embers is stronger than the Doviello
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger.
Ability: Trap: Each night, you can set up a pit trap for someone. If their brains are less than yours, they will not spot it, and die.
Background: You and your comrades, the Spearman and the Bonegnasher have seen where blind leadership by muscle leads. Your clan is supposed to be the smart clan, right? Well this war with the Doviello may prove to be just the opportunity you needed for a new path forward. Your experience with sharp pointy things, if used well, could prove invaluable in eliminating those that stand in your way. There may be those who think similarly in the other camp, if you can just get in touch with them ...
QT: Fire of Reason
Team-mates: classical_hero, alsark

Mind-based night kill.

Filli_Noctus:
Spoiler :
Player:Filli_Noctis
Role: Javelin Thrower
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 5
Brawn:1
VC: Mind Over Matter
Major Victory: Your team's brains and brawn summed is greater than all other players brawns combined.
Minor Victory: The Clan of Embers is eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger than the Clan
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan is stronger.
Ability: Literacy: Each night, you can cross to the enemy lines and search one of their camps for literature. Anyone who's literate may well be sympathetic to your cause
Background: You and your comrades, the Shield Bearer and the Bison Rider have seen where blind leadership by muscle leads. To survive in this new, warm, world, intellect must be allowed a role. There may be those who think similarly in the other camp, if you can just get in touch with them, and perhaps by searching there, you may find them.

QT:Tool-Using
Team-Mates:johnhughthom, topsecret

Guilt-innocence scanner. Finally found classical_hero on the last day of actual play. Optical would also have scanned as literate.

johnhughthom
Accidentally deleted role PM.

Protector, but took the damage himself, likely underpowered.

topsecret:
Spoiler :
Player:topsecret
Role: Bison Rider
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 2
Brawn:6
VC: Mind Over Matter
Major Victory: Your team's brains and brawn summed is greater than all other players brawns combined.
Minor Victory: The Clan of Embers is eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger than the Clan
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan is stronger.
Ability: Slay: Each night you may attempt to kill someone. If you are stronger, you will succeed
Background: You and your comrades, the Shield Bearer and the Javelin Thrower have seen where blind leadership by muscle leads. To survive in this new, warm, world, intellect must be allowed a role. Even you can see that, and you're not the sharpest tool in the shed. Fortunately, you're strong and may thus be able to help eliminate those who stand in your way. There may be those who think similarly in the other camp, if you can just get in touch with them ...

QT:Tool-Using
Team-Mates:johnhughthom, Filli_Noctus

Strength-based kill. Got in the lynch once, which harmed his efficacy, then got brain-zapped by his own team.

Optical:
Spoiler :
Player:Optical
Role: Wolf Rider
Nation: Clan of Embers
Brains: 7
Brawn: 3
VC: Zombies!!!
Major Victory: You and your zombies brawn is greater than the total brawn of everyone else remaining.
Minor Victory: The Doviello are eliminated
Minor Defeat: Innocent victory and the Clan of Embers is stronger than the Doviello
Major Defeat: Innocent victory and the Doviello are stronger.
Ability: Necromancy: Every night, you resurrect whoever died that day as a zombie in your service. If their strength at death was 0, it's .5. Otherwise it's whatever their strength was. This new strength only counts towards your victory, not towards voting or preventing other's victories.
Ability: Embalming Poison: This is a 3-use day ability. You can either poison someone of your own nation, they die at the end of the day with no strength loss, and your necromancy ability that night is used on them. OR, you can use it to target someone on the other nation. IF they are one of the two lynch targets for that side that day, they will take no damage during the combat, but die in addition to whoever else dies.
Background: You are no mere Orc! Your father may have been one, but your mother was a Sheaim necromancer!!! You have found her text, and you have learned her skills. This conflict will let you build a zombie army and rule the world. Muahahaha!!!

Solo scum role. Got Brains and Brawn confused, and thus died early.

Mind Over Matter won if their cumulative Brains and Brawn was greater than the sum of all other's brawn.

Scum might have been slightly overpowered, although the end result shows that they obviously weren't too much, and the elimination of the SK also probably made them seem stronger than they were.
There were six scum on the same team, but they were divided into two groups of three, one on each side, and there was indeed some cross-fire.

Role PMs, continued:

Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Oratory: If you become chieftain, your side's "champion" will fight with an additional 2 strength during the fight.
Background: The old chief kept a lid on your "jibber-jabber". Perhaps now you can become chief, and then you can talk all you want, and inspire your people to victory!!!

The additional 2 points were only during the fight, so they didn't help with survival much, but did increase the chances of Doviello dying.
Clan Chieftain ability was, every other day could make Champions fight it out, with weaker's strength subtracted from stronger, targets don't matter.

Backwards Logic
Spoiler :
Player: Backwards Logic
Role: Goblin

Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Security: If you become chieftain, you become immune to night-kills
Background: You're a shrimpy little goblin. It will take all your cunning to survive this war. If you become chieftain, you can get other, stronger folk to protect you. Of course, that would mean drawing attention to yourself...

Ability: SMASH!!! Each day, you may, if you so choose perform a public, strength-based, day kill on any member of your own nation.
Background: You are ogre. Ogre Smash!!!! Thinking for the weak.

Due to huge strength, basically owned the Clan vote for the last few days. Incredibly vulnerable to mind attacks, his death or braindeath would have spelled defeat for the innocents in all likelihood.

Ability: Hypnosis: Each night, you can try to hypnotize someone. If successful, they are role-blocked. Of course, if they're brainy enough to resist, they're brainy enough to fake.
Background: You are the Witch Doctor of this tribe, and while the last chieftain liked you, he's dead, and this is not a good time to be seen as a smart guy. Better prove your loyalty, and fast.

Ability: Poultice: Each night, you can administer an herbal poultice to someone's wounds, increasing their brawn by 3 or back to it's maximum, whichever is less.
Background: You are a lizardman, born for exploration not pitched battle. Perhaps your woodsy lore will come in handy, though it might peeve the Witch Doctor.

Quite powerful role, completely inactive.

Ability: Obsequiousness: If you are a lynch candidate and the runner-up is less than 4 behind you, they are chosen instead

Removed topsecret from the game as a threat with his death.

Spoiler :
Player: Dreadnought
Role: Girl

Brains: 2
Brawn: 5

Minor Defeat: Clan of Embers eliminated
Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Measure of a man: Each night you can scan someone and determine their Brawns.
Background: You may have been the last Chieftain's daughter by his first wife, but you're hardly a girl anymore. You're a big strong woman, and with the use of your feminine wiles, given a night with anyone, you're sure you can find out just how Brawny they are.[/QUOTE]

Background: You are the new widow of the old Chief. You believe whole-heartedly in the muscle-based traditions of your society. That said, you see no need to altogether leave your mind unused...

While she was chieftain, it was much more difficult for scum to win. Regrettably died day 1. There were no Brain-based victories.

Potentially useful for slowing the game down and/or identifying which kills came from which camp.

Ability: Sentry: Every other night, you can stand watch and see how many people from each side take actions targeting people on the other side.
Background: You are the scout, charged with standing watch over the camp. Regrettably, you're too weak to do anything about it, but at least you'll know how much traffic there was each night.

Interesting ability, lots of information, not much precision.

Takhisis:
Spoiler :

Background: You are the shaman of the Doviello. With your potions, you, like your ancestors before you are the spiritual heart of the nation. Regrettably, you're a little new at this, so you think you might have slightly messed up the recipes that your father told you on his death-bed. Whoops ...

Blue removed a person's vote, green was lethal, red (changed to orange for voting reasons) increased a person's brains by 4. Only way in game to come back from brain-death. Almost enabled Filli_Noctus to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Daveshack:
Spoiler :
Player:Daveshack
Role: Battlemaster
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 1
Brawn: 5
VC: Might Makes Right

Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Tactics: If you become Chieftain, your nation's "champion" takes all the damage for your side.
Background: You are the Battlemaster, trained and skilled in the art of war. Clearly, with the chieftain's death, you should be the new chieftain. It is only right.

Another role that went down early. If he became chieftain, Doviello victory would have been much more possible.

BSmith:
Spoiler :
Player: Bsmith
Role: Berserker
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 2
Brawn: 6
VC: Might Makes Right
Major Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated and the Doviello stronger than the Clan of Embers OR the Clan of Embers eliminated

Ability: Berserk: If you are chosen for a lynch by your side, the last three players to choose you take 1 damage. If you are chosen for a lynch by the other side, the last two take 1 damage. However, you take double damage from all lynch proceedings
Background: No one knows, no one cares. You came running into battle from the woods one day, stark naked, and your enemies fled before you. The gods are truly with you!!

Vengeful lynchee, unfortunately drank first the vote removal, then the poison.

JoanK
Spoiler :
Player:JoanK
Role: Tinkerer

Ability: Scavenge: Each night, you can go out and comb the battlefield for debris that you can use in your construction.
Build: Each night, you can work on your War Machine. After three build nights, you get +4 Brawn. You must scavenge before building (i.e. at least 1 scavenge before Build 1, 2 total before Build 2, etc.)
Background: You have always been handy with your hands. You know your people are suspicious of mental stuff, but this is really just a little idle work with your hands, it's not the same.

Could have provided a critical last second boost of strength, but died too soon.

Civcube:
Spoiler :
Player: Civcube
Role: Brawler
Nation: Doviello
Brains: 2
Brawn: 3
VC: Might Makes Right

Minor Victory: All threats to the status quo eliminated, but the Clan stronger than the Doviello
Minor Defeat: Doviello eliminated
Major Defeat: Victory of a non Might-Makes Right VC
Ability: Talk things over: Scans their Brains, but reduces your Brains by 1. Only usable on your Nation.
Background: You're really a pretty reasonable guy. You like to talk things over over a nice pint, and another, and another...

Brain scan, with a catch. If he got the orange potion, he could have scanned many more times.

Final conclusions: Doviello were underpowered, both innocent and scum.

Can't you guys just enable it for people with few posts like you did with enabling PM's? You could even use the same thread for both of them.

If that filter can also check for PMs enabled, that would be sufficient. I'll propose that as a workaround.

In hindsight, I should've signed up to be a replacement. Far more people went AWOL than I anticipated, and I didn't get to do much as I was sheep-mobbed right away.

Well done Innocents, particularly the last survivors on the Clan. Lots of the roles were really interesting to see, thanks of course for posting them and the game was very fun Autolycus.

I also don't think our other QT has been posted: http://www.quicktopic.com/47/H/Ta7EMwpFGzJk

which is a bit funny combined with Visorslash's QT. Especially after I died it was worrying me that Ninja and Visor hadn't really trusted each other to be Innocent for a long time, but you systematically got the scum in the end. And to the Doviello Innocents who got victory too instead of all dying out, well done to stick with it.

From the conclusion and wrap-up I don't think the scum were weak this game, they certainly came close to victory and were in a better spot than past games where several scum couldn't even "outstrength" 5 or 6 townies. It seemed like the scum were always in the running for overpower victory this game and a couple inactive Innocent roles didn't help. I can see the Doviello townies weren't as powerful, but one thing is it didn't feel like that during the game from the perspective of the players - I think the Clan had reason to be paranoid and it affected play. The Doviello outnumbered us in the first place and the serial killer was also on the Clan side, which made it further seem like we were disadvantaged in numbers. I do think it was a very successful use of the divided town concept.

I was pretty lazy the first few days of the game, didn't have all that much time to dedicate to it, and I was happy to let it play out as it went. However, I decided to step in and almost got myself killed. I decided then to ask for help from people, hoping I would get some takers, and Ninja contacted me. He roleclaimed and I told him to vig someone, originally BSmith I believe, then Choxorn (he ended up attacking BSmith due to forgetting to change) I contacted everyone alive in the game asking for hunches, brain, brawn and contacts, etc. I got a few replies, notably from JHT asking me to tell him some more myself and leading me to catch him, BSmith replying and our massive conversation in which I eventually read him as town and gave him the name of the Vig, my powers, etc. Mat93 also replied and said he thought I was scum, but told me his stats. Later on I contacted NinjaCow and said that we would work towards Clan victory. I never really trusted him until later in the game, I revealed him to Mat as well, with explicit instructions to reveal Ninja if I died by knifing. Classical Hero replied and said he had a high brain stat and no hunches on the scum, which I thought was suspiscious. Eventually I set up a network with myself and Ninja, and myself, BSmith and Mat93. With Mat's info we were able to determine that Ninja was most likely innocent, and that there was definitely a scum amongst the Doviello (most likely FN or Choxorn). After that we just pushed for their lynches, and I just attempted to command the lynches because I believed I had the information necesary to solve the game (and I did). BSmith killing himself was annoying, but not a real loss, and we were able to force the victory eventually.

The divided town concept was neat, though I think the scum were a bit overpowered. Overall, I believe I did a pretty good job, and especially on the final day, with the correct lynch of Classical, and the suspiscions of FN, JHT and TS being correct, I'm pretty happy with how I played this game.

That's hilarious considering that I had Dread on orders accuse you if I died multiple times.

But once I wasn't dead for a long time, I thought that you were definitely town, no self-respecting Mafioso keeps a Vigilante alive for that long.

Damn, I love being Vigilante. It is insanely fun. It's almost as fun as hosting.

TBH if I hadn’t have been knifed twice at this point I probably wouldn’t have taken the risk with the potions. At that time we (at least I) were still not certain about Ninja, and one more attack would do me in. I figured there would be at least one good potion in the batch. Unfortunately for me it was the only one I didn’t drink.

It was also a bit of a role play as my character had high brawn (at least to start) but low brains. I figured it was in character. :D
