Unit Requests: Steampunk

Smaller legs on the same body will work fine, especially at civ-scale. To redo the whole thing again would be nuts.

Agreed, tom2050. To the list of what you would need to redo add that the animations would need to be completely redone because the math is different because of the now different relationships between skeleton & mesh. Far too much time involved. Your second solution makes a lot more sense.

Oh yea, I forgot about that one also. That occured even when I tried stretching the spine bones (lengthening the whole unit).

I might redo Dejah Thoris after I make a few amazons (which a modified Dejah is what I'm using), she looks much better using Mental Ray render.

Just as an update.. I hope to get the Thark Captain and the 4Sword Elite Thark up today/later tonight.

I'm almost done with the Capt animations, so it's just render time.

Might make a 2nd variation of the same guy with another weapon (sword probably); this one uses the mace.

What a great looking weapon! Radium Rifle, yes?

The Captain and 4Sword Elite will complete the foot units we need; but don't let me slow you down.....

What's left on the wish list are:

Child Thark - newly hatched (autoproduced)
Thark Worker (female?)
Thark Settler - a raucous group, preferably.
Thark Thoat Rider(s) - best on Barsoom, by reputation
Thark War Wagon
Thark Jeddack (King) - not needed, but it would complete the set...

Note that I use the term wish list....

I'm finishing up the 4sword Elite swordsman now. Your footunits are done without the Padwar (Radium Pistol)? I think that's the only major one left. If I make a Home Guard (female with knife), I'll do that when I do a female Thark worker.

Any ideas on what a Thark War Wagon looks like? I couldn't find anything.

Child Thark (as in baby; or 10 yr old?) being used solely as auto-produced to upgrade to a specific unit? So only default is needed? Newly hatched I suppose you mean goo goo gaa gaa baby. so similar to human baby, only tharkish; with egg shells laying about.

Boy, if you ever want to see all of your Thark units in one place, look up 'Thark wagon' in Google Images.

After some research, I think you can scratch the War Wagon. That came out of the "what units are available?" phase of planning, and would have been a theoretical 'thoat chariot'. Turns out that Tharkian Thoats are so large that they're like tanks anyway.

You're right about the Padwar; as I've been filling in Units on the Master Unit List, I put the Top Sergeant #2 in the Padwar slot, and it got me screwed up. I can find another way to use the 2nd Sarge.

If you look at that Unit List you can see where the remaining units would go. I don't know what we'll do about cannon units; the Green Martians don't use them in the books (like they don't use flyers, except as passengers). Perhaps Thoat Riders with Radium Guns would do, d'ya think?

Re Hatchlings: I could only find one picture of a Thark Hatchling, but suffice to say that they're described as not too small, and able to get around quite well as soon as they hatch. 10 - 12 yrs old looking, I'd say...

This thread needs a bump and bumps should be done in style when possible.

So, a teleforce particle-beam-weapon-carrying-defensive-tower…
According to Tesla production of the particle beam is dependent upon four inventions of the following nature:

A method and apparatus for producing rays and other manifestations of energy in free air, eliminating the high vacuum necessary at present for the production of such rays and beams. This is accomplished with a novel form of high vacuum tube, one end of which is open to the atmosphere. The projectiles are accelerated in a vacuum and then conducted into the atmosphere through a valvular conduit.[2]
A method and process for producing very great electrical force in the range of 60,000,000 volts to propel the particles to their objective. Tesla specified that this could be done with a large electrostatic generator on a new principle and of very great power, in many respects similar to a Van de Graaff generator. In place of a charge-carrying belt it employs a circulating stream of desiccated air that is propelled through a hermetically sealed ductwork by a Tesla disc blower. A Wardenclyffe type apparatus could also be used for this purpose.
A method for amplifying this process in the second invention. The exterior of the high potential terminal is equipped with numerous bulbs of some insulating material each containing, “an electrode of thin metal sheet suitably rounded” and “exhausted to the highest vacuum obtainable.”
A new method for producing a tremendous electrical repelling force. It appears this would be applied to the projector or gun element of the system in the form of “provisions for imparting to a minute particle an extremely high charge.” While the specific details about this aspect of the design are not readily apparent, it seems that strict attention to the fulfillment of requirements 1, 2 and 3 is critical to success. In Tesla’s words, “by the application of my discoveries it is possible to increase the force of repulsion more than a million times and what was heretofore impossible is rendered easy of accomplishment.” [3], [4]

The tube would project a single row of highly charged particles and there would be no dispersion, even at great distance. Because the cross section of the charge carriers could be reduced to almost microscopic dimensions and since the charged particles would self-focus via "gas focusing," an immense concentration of energy, practically irrespective of distance, could be attained. In 1940 Tesla estimated that each station would cost no more than $2,000,000 and could have been constructed in a few months.
Inspirational pictures would be appreciated, but I've already started doing a base. :)

Looks more like an Octogon. Since I did it a 24- face pseudo-cylinder it's just a matter of rejoining a few edges.

If this is still early on here's another image - a lot more building detail:

Great, much better. :wavey:

Although you've linked the spoiler. Every time I open or close it I get a new tab with the same pic!

4. For Blue Monkey's Dark Continent Steampunk Mod: African animals. Might as well ask now!

DAZ3D released some time ago a Safari Pack with a few African mammals, for free. Unfortunately, since then, it seems to have been put back on the paying side of the website. Nevertheless, I did legally download them back then and still have them.

There are the usual elephant, a rhinoceros, a pronghorn, a zebra and a panther. If you need one, I can give it a try.

Haven't figured out exactly what is needed yet. And then check against what tom2050 & others have made.

Some of the "extinct animals" may very well get used - it is an alternate world, after all. & need to think about what to use for the mokèlé-mbèmbé. It may actually end up being something closer to a kongamato, a ngoubou or a kasai rex. Could even be a small non-playable civ with all four. But that would be telling ...
