Decline in OT activity

But ... people are wrong on the internet!

I think part of the blame for OT's decline is JR no longer uses his novelty accounts like MisterCooper. A bit of structured insanity didn't hurt anybody

This topic itself is a good example why OT is losing popularity: lot of posts, little context. Unless you dont feel this is your home you wont bother look twice threads like this where you single post remain uncommented, burried under two pages of jokes, personal clashing and derailing.

Actually whole firaxis forum is like this today, I only remain here because of few good civ4 mods.

MobBoss, in a very roundabout and probably accidental way, makes a good point: if you find somebody's views noxious, refuse to engaging with them. Block them if you have to. Repeating the same bitter arguments over and over again achieves nothing expect lowering the tone of the whole forum.
The ignore feature annoys me, I've tried to ignore people in the past but the fact that you can still see their posts in quote tags & see that they've posted makes it even hardly than ever to ignore them.

The real question is where are the noobs talking about civ. That needs to be here for cfc to continue to remain relevant.

Mostly on Steam discussions, I fear :(

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I had a certain toxic organic compound (who thankfully no longer seems to frequent this forum) blocked but I'd always see his posts in quotes anyway and would often peak at them out of curiosity.

MisterCooper here - I am still using my JR novelty account as well as my Gucumatz novelty account.

We all are JR's novelty accounts. Including the mods... which means that wherever he's infracting himself, he's literally beating himself?

That's weird. Ew.

I think it's pretty simple dude, look at unemployment rates at the beginning of your chart and compared to now. Posters got jobs, less time to waste online

Maybe he has split to the accounts of MrCooper and Agent(something).

Through the darkness of future's past
the magician longs to see
One chants out between two worlds
FIRE WALK WITH ME

I'm self-employed, though I still find time to post stuff. I occasionally posted while on the job, to be honest.

However, I do notice my post rate is rather low compared to many other regulars.

I think my post rate was highest when I was in middle school/early high school, and I was an angry young man who had lots of say to people who were wrong on the internet... so back around '07. Nowadays, being more relaxed, I guess my post count has gone down, but it's not as bad as it was a while back I guess. I'm still unexmployed, though, and school isn't terrible taxing (compared to other things which aren't as time consuming), so I guess I have time and energy to afford.

I think many threads here have had their argument "won" by one side, even if the opposing side didn't acknowledge it and the thread continued for 20 more pages.

One of the forum's less endearing qualities.

I stopped posting, and mostly stopped reading, after I set up my ignore list.

I populated the ignore list with posters I'd decided it was a waste of time to read or engage. OK ... fine. Now I can just talk to the interesting people, right? Yay.

But what were they doing? They were spending most of their time arguing with people I'd decided were a waste of time.

Such threads stopped being amusing rather quickly.

Almost all the interesting topics, IMO, involve discussions DOMINATED by deeply-uninteresting posters. A relatively few posters - a very few - set the tone and quality of many discussions, and not for the better.

It's not a good dynamic.

There are a number of posters I miss discussing things with. But too much time was spent not talking *with* them, but rather talking *at* other posters while they happened to do the same thing. PM's could be used for a little back-channel discussion, but PMs are hardly a replacement for a threaded forum.

I was just talking about that in fiftychat to Lohrenswald the other day about hiding posts in plain sight. Sometimes you gotta obscure your posts with language that energizes your intended audience and bores you intended not-audience, then you can have some pretty great conversations even as King Kognitive Dissonance is climbing the Empire State Building around you.

I miss MisterCooper. :(
I always agreed with his opinions.

  • What is your opinion of the decline in OT activity?
  • Why is this happening, in your opinion? Feel free to mention any possible factors, including moderation as long as the discussion is general and mentions no specific cases.
  • Does it bother you that the forum isn’t as active as it used to be, or do you prefer a more sedate posting rate?
  • Is this a site-wide phenomenon?
  • Do you have any suggestions for slowing or reversing this trend?
  • Did I pick a useful measure of OT activity?

This thread is entirely my idea and isn’t “official” in any way. Discuss!

I never met a 3 month old thread I didn't want to necro.

There's so many other things competing for eyeballs these days. Why create an account and participate on a forum just for Civilization when you can go on the Steam forums with your account and talk about Civilization as well as every other game you play. Why participate in CFC OT when you can tailor the content closer to your liking on something like reddit? Specialist forums are no longer a thing that are in the forefront of your mind if you want to discuss something on the internet.
