I thought I'd share some units I'm going to be doing in the future. Right now, I'm just getting costumes down. I haven't even added weapons, so none of these have been animated or anything. I'll repost this picture as the models grow.

I have essentially no time table for these units. I'll basically just work on them as I feel like it. (And after I finish a few other obligations).

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Going in order from left to right: Zebra Warrior (Zulu), Gatling Gun Elephant, Choson Soldier (Korea), Koguryo Soldier (Korea), Saracen (Arabs), "Hwarang" Archer based on RoN model (Korea), Qin Soldier (China), Firelancer/Handgunner (China), African Slave, Velites (Rome), Iroquois Archer (Iroquois), Yuen Soldier (Mongols), Knight of Anubis (Egypt), Hun Soldier (Mongols).

Medieval Ship, 18th century Ship, Drakkar.

EDIT: ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE NOT THE FINAL SIZES.

GREAT! Finally somebody works on Korean, Mongol, and Chinese units which are much needed. I've been craving Korean units forever since RoN was released. Now we even got a foot Mongol unit. Fantastic. I like the Iroquois Archer as well.

One thing, why is the Arab warrior called a Saracen, weren't Saracen's a group/nation of Arabs?

Well, yes, the saracens were, but the clothing set I got this from is called the Saracen for John Malis's Crusade set for Poser. So that's what I called it here. I think it'll probably be ultimately named Arab Soldier or something... I'm planning on making an archer and a medieval infantry unit from this clothing set, but the textures, clothing colors, will be different, and he'll have a helmet in addition to the turban.

I like previews :) Now, prepare for rude comments ;)
- again, shadows are too dark ;) In Poser you can set "shadow" intensiveness for each light. Try to get lighter shadows and use 7-8 shadow colors in palette (instead of 16). BTW try Kinboat's setup (from tutorials section), he really did a good job getting lights and shadows close to civ3 look, and we can use it too (though your shadows look good, like in that setup, except for intensiveness).
- I know that Zebra comes from earlier debate... I was against it by then, and now I'm certain - horse is simple and good! you really don't need a zebra to say that this is african.
- I really like the asian flavor units (clothes are cool). Do these first please, and leave zebra the last ;)

They look good. The Zebra in the Zebra warrior looks like it has a beaver tale though... The concept of a gatling gun elephant is also very interesting.

>> you really don't need a zebra to say that this is african

Indeed, we need a Quagga ! ;) I though it come as consensus in another thread that it was either a quagga/zebra, either a painted horse.

My three favorites (in order from favorite to third favorite):

Elephant Gatling Gun
Zebra Warrior
Native American Warrior

BTW try Kinboat's setup

This is his setup... ;)

The other thing is that about the Zebra Warrior, it is not actually supposed to be a zebra. It is supposed to be a horse in with zebra warpaint. It is still fictional, but it has merit. Closed-formation cavalry charges would benefit from the disorienting effect of the colors on the enemy.

It's really a lot darker.

any time table on the fulminata?

he's got Roma Legiones prima prioritas! :whipped:

hes already startedm and has had promised longer the Legionary Fulminata- and the fulminata is more needed then the velite ;)

Make the Zebra Warrior and Elephant Galting Gun first... PLEASE!

Can I put in a request for a unit after you are done with these? Assualt Zebra. Sounds odd, but a mad with a gun on either a zebra, or a zebra painted horse. A cavalry version of the Zebra Warrior.

@aaminion00: If you mean in Row 1, #3, then no, that's a Korean soldier from the Choson dynasty.

Believe it or not, when the Americans invaded Korea (briefly) in 1871, they came across soldiers like these still dressed in these outfits. They also were bombarded by one cannon that had a casting date from the 14th century.

@embryodead: I'll see what I can do about the intensity of the shadows.

@Xen: And yes, I'm still working on the fulminata.

To everybody, feel free to post pics of other non-Western units you'd like to see done here. As I've said before, I want very much to fill in the gaps for the other civilizations.

I think Kinboat's doing an archer for the Iroquois already, so this guy could work well as a Longbowman replacement.

And I think I'm going to work on a Native American musket replacement since it doesn't seem like utahjazz is going to finish the wonderful model he made any time soon.

I want you to know that I have not yet begun making of my own props from scratch... the most I've done is used existing props and changed them to come closest to my needs. I cannot, therefore, make everything exactly like what one might envision. These units were made largely because of two purchases I made from 3dcommune and Renderosity of some new Chinese and Mongolian outfits... and really I did a lot by simple texturing. 2D texturing can go a long way towards creating a genuine look for units as I've discovered.

And also, I would like to thank utahjazz who provided me with the gatling gun prop which he made himself several months ago. The gatling gun elephant was on hold for a LONG time ;).

If any of the 3DS or Rhino modelers would like to help me out, I still need the following items:

1. Yak (yes, the animal as I have not been able to find any models of one online) Doesn't have to be really high-poly, and I could add the bone structure in Poser if you don't feel up to it. The Battle Yak is something Kal-El and I had been cooking up back in August :) And the scary part is that they were REAL!

2. Chariots There are some nice pictures in the Japanese Unit Pack thread in the Units forum that shows Asian chariots. Might be an interesting challenge.

3. Cataphract Armor that can fit the Charger horse or standard Poser horse.
